At Rivers’ Bridg s today the annual memorial services In remembrance of the Confederate dead will be held. To be there and join in giving merited bovor to the few survivor veterans of the cause that perished without a strain upon its record Is at once a sacred doty and a high privilege. From that oh •ervance none can come away without a loftier appreciation of the manhood and womanhood of the old South, and a firmer faith that the sons and daugh ters of the new South will bo as loyal to the right as were the fathers and mothers, brother* and sisters of that cruel feign of war and want. The first automobile ever rebuilt in this section was in tow n on Thursday. It made the run from Blackville in 30 minutes, including two stops, one to chase and catch a flying hat that the high wind whirled away many steps. The new Howard Hhops, (X) by 80 feet, two stores high, and supplied with a com plete equipment have Inst been occu pied and arranged and offer the best facilities in South Weal Carolina for al) automobile work, and the long ex- perlonee and mechanical skill and tal ent of the Messrs Howard guarantee satisfaction to al! their patrons. AVilliston was vi«lted by a very pa thetic and disastrous fire on Monday morning about 11 o'clock and as a re sult thrre families are homeless The fire started In the old Broadwater home now occupied by Mr. J. S- Ussery, pre sumably in the kitchen. A high south- vest w .ml was blowing which fanned the flames to fury and it was seen at once that the house was doomed and possibly the greater part of the town, Th* residence* of -Meaars. G. A. Benoott and T J. Woodward next caught and were entirely consumed. The houses wore ail as dry as tinder, owing to the long rainless spell we have had, and the only thing that saved the business section from total destruction was a fortunate veering of the wind eastward. This, however, drove the sparks to the barns and outhouses of Dr. J. I*. Lee, which were burned together with their contents Including several hundred bushels of corn. The home* of Mr. J. E. Newsom and Mrs. J. A. Rountree caught but the fire was extinguished before much damage had been done. Volunteer firefighter* did splendid work but were at a disadvantage on account of the high wind and the lack Of proper apparatus.
