We went sight seeing Saturday af ternoon, making our first daylight trip over the South Bound from Denmark to Fairfax. We confess to surprise at the rapid building up of the interme diate towns. Where a couple of years ago corn and cotton fields were undis- turl>od at this season except by the bird hunter we noted In quick sucees- alen pretty towns and a pleflt)’ of peo ple. To-our eye and judgment too mauy stores and too few .churches, shops and school louses have been built. And wo were sorry to see indi cations of an outbreak of cotton fever next year as the short and narrow small grain patches may be counted a symptom of that sickness. In onr rapid ride we could only take a bird's eye look at town and country, and there is no wonder that all travel lers fall in Igve with the pretty territo ry through which the South Bound and baltkehatchie roll. A couple of hours at Fairfax were pleasantly passed. Her citizens are calm and serene and courteous. They have faith In her future and believe thr/lu good time their town will grow ty be the pride and pearl of the South Bound*. While" they irlti build up slowly they will build up surely and •void having to dry nurse any bur*ted boom hereafter. Very certs In lv a good beginning has been made. In our walk around town we "were kindly greeted, but our friends seemed more anxious to get than to give new s. By dint of frequent inquiry we found that Fairfax is counted to bo all the year round healthier than the mountains, and the centre of the finest fanning country in all lower Carolina. The looks of the people indicate that there tf much truth in the claim. The brick building of Messrs. T. M. Young & Co., attracts first attention by Us sl»e, graceful proportions and tasteful finish. It Is a two story mer cantile establishment, 100 by 32 feet, with high ceilings and a plenty of light. It la well tilled with assorted merchan dise, the clerks are busy nud customers In line salting their turns. The firm does a business of some $73,000 a year and is gilt-edged In financial circles. It could indefinitely increase Its trans actions, but prefers conservative to speculative methods The cicrer sen ior, M r. F. M. Young, Is general man ager of the cotton and outside busi ness, while Mr. Terry, the junior, is the capable director of the in door trade. The store of A. A L. W, Youman* was so crowded by shoppers, jtotored and otherwise, that we passed over to w here the aroma of the coming Christ mas rests In and aroutul tiie full store of Mr. J. W. WiJHams, who gives kindly web onvi. We talk health railroads etc., with clever Dr. Cooj and next meet our good friend Rev. J. i'Fnacber, who takes capital care of the weary and hungry wayfarer, news paper folks included. He is a busy man and aa ingenious as many Invent ors who have grown rich on lighter applications of ideas to new uses than he has madet He shows us his labor saving and safety insuring arrange ments and points ns to the mill rock that after seventy years of are still running full time. We meet Mr. Fred Lightsey, aged 19, young in years but thoroughly trusted as an agent and telegraphlcj^Bperator, but the train rolls up before we dreamed it was due and off we gu. Our old friend the Congressional Record has resumed its w intry visits to us. Oconee County farmers are dissatis fied with this year’s tobacco experience and will not plant again. The home factory would not allow a profitable price for the fragrant weed. j Your Uncle George Tillman is at. bhk post in Washington, not cast cjown by his defeat. He is reported as saying that he will be heard from again, but it is not stated in what part of the politi- tal harvest field be will go reaping. . u* a i aiid ooge. Candidates foijlGov. Tillman’s Guber natorial shoes in 1894 are alrcnd y crop, ping out thickly. The most, prominent •o far spoken of are Senators John Gary Evans of Aiken, W. H. Timmerman,of Edgefield, Dr. J. Win. Stokes, of Or angeburg, and lion. L. D. Childs, of Co lumbia. - ■■ i Alfred B. bbepperson of New York is generally credited with knowing more about cotton production than any other American editor. H,s latest ♦•pinion was published^ on Saturday^ He estimates the present year’s crop at frofllMU$0'000 baUs downward. It may be less but will not be more. He haws his conclusion upon the fact that the redaction in acreage was 191 per eeuL, hi the use of fertilU* u 3$ u> 40 r went, and that the coubn lands were iMta eahautted by the two enprmous ►s. Ife tbinas tiuft shout will be maintained, al- • Ul be occasional lluctu- Si Gov. Tillman issued a proclamation on Saturday extending the time for the payment of Uses until the 1st of Janu ary He considers “that the public wel fare w ill be Jeopardized if the extension goes beyond that date.” •' A joint resolution extending the time to the 15th of January has gone through the house and passed two readings’ifi the Senate. Once a year the raiktays in this State plead poverty as a reason why they should l>o excused from furnishing sep arate race accommodations for travel lers. The experience of the South Bound Ksilrond downs their defence, it is the only, railroad in the State thatjsso con siderate of the comfort of its patrons and in return it. is doing better than ail its older competitors. mmmmmmmmmmammmmrnmmmmmm r . Gen. MoDn declines to contest the seat of George-Washington Murray in the FUty-thirrf Congress and “the bald black eagle” of Sumter w ill sit undis turbed for two years as Urn representa tive of the Seventh District. For the honor and salary of the posi tion ho should he profoundly grateful to the sleepy Democrat* of Sumter, who napped while their wide awake broth er* in black picked the political plum. Col. W. J. Craig, of Augusta, Gener al Freight Agent of the Fort Rqya 1 and Augusta Kailw'ay, whites us that he wishes to know what tiie melon Hcreage will be next year along the lino of that road. If it promises to be large enough to warrant the outlay he propose* to arrange for special fast through freight trains to hurry them to market. Last year there w'as big money In melons even with the big fruit crop that was made all over the country, and he thinks that the World's Fair in Chicago next year will boom prices in the West. Di fact our North ern ft lends are just finding out how good Carolina melons are and soon they will all be Oliver Twists. Col. Craig will be glad to receive letters from melon farmers along the f. R. & A., giving their opinions of prospect*. A fashion writer says that dresses are to be full this year. We prefer them full. The idea of a dress empty is ridiculous in the extreme. We should like to knowjvhat; satlsfa* tion it would be to a young uian to hold an empty dress on his lap. SaVe YoUr Slock.
