We went sight seeing Saturday af ternoon, making our first daylight trip over the South Bound from Denmark to Fairfax. We confess to surprise at the rapid building up of the interme diate towns. Where a couple of years ago corn and cotton fields were undis- turl>od at this season except by the bird hunter we noted In quick sucees- alen pretty towns and a pleflt)’ of peo ple. To-our eye and judgment too mauy stores and too few .churches, shops and school louses have been built. And wo were sorry to see indi cations of an outbreak of cotton fever next year as the short and narrow small grain patches may be counted a symptom of that sickness. In onr rapid ride we could only take a bird's eye look at town and country, and there is no wonder that all travel lers fall in Igve with the pretty territo ry through which the South Bound and baltkehatchie roll. A couple of hours at Fairfax were pleasantly passed. Her citizens are calm and serene and courteous. They have faith In her future and believe thr/lu good time their town will grow ty be the pride and pearl of the South Bound*. In our walk around town we "were kindly greeted, but our friends seemed more anxious to get than to give new s. By dint of frequent inquiry we found that Fairfax is counted to bo all the year round healthier than the mountains, and the centre of the finest fanning country in all lower Carolina. The looks of the people indicate that there tf much truth in the claim. The brick building of Messrs. T. M. Young & Co., attracts first attention by Us sl»e, graceful proportions and tasteful finish. It Is a two story mer cantile establishment, 100 by 32 feet, with high ceilings and a plenty of light. It la well tilled with assorted merchan dise, the clerks are busy nud customers In line salting their turns. The firm does a business of some $73,000 a year and is gilt-edged In financial circles. It could indefinitely increase Its trans actions, but prefers conservative to speculative methods The cicrer sen ior, M r. F. M. Young, Is general man ager of the cotton and outside busi ness, while Mr. Terry, the junior, is the capable director of the in door trade. The store of A. A L.
