It was a merci 1«* high wayman, which infested a i*>rtk>n of the road, and frequently curried off tbedriv- ers of bullock carts to feast upon them in the jungle. The motives feared to travel with a sin gle cart, and it became the custom to pass the dreaded spot with several teams together. Tlua, however, proved a vain precaution, for the tiger seized thodriver of the hindmost cart and made away with him in spite of the cries of thoeo left behind. At length Mr. Dnff , the superintend ent of police, provided two covered carts, each drawn as usual tty two bullocks. The leading one was fitted with strong bars of bamboo* which formed an ini- penetrable cage. In this the driver was seated, and Mr. Duff himself sat v/ith his, -face towiird the rear, prepared ta-fire through the bars at the moment of at tack. , 0 This would hav^beon an exciting time for the driver, but that' individual was personated by a dummy stuffed with straw, which might ,prove tempting to the tiger’s eye but would hardly satisfy his palate. • , Slowly the carts moved along the dreaded path.
