came the victim of* imctical joke, was
not the typical old ami mangy animal,
but a powerful beset of almost unexam
pled ferocity. It was a merci 1«* high
wayman, which infested a i*>rtk>n of the
road, and frequently curried off tbedriv-
ers of bullock carts to feast upon them
in the jungle.
The motives feared to travel with a sin
gle cart, and it became the custom to
pass the dreaded spot with several teams
together. Tlua, however, proved a vain
precaution, for the tiger seized thodriver
of the hindmost cart and made away
with him in spite of the cries of thoeo
left behind.
At length Mr. Dnff , the superintend
ent of police, provided two covered carts,
each drawn as usual tty two bullocks.
The leading one was fitted with strong
bars of bamboo* which formed an ini-
penetrable cage. In this the driver was
seated, and Mr. Duff himself sat v/ith his,
-face towiird the rear, prepared ta-fire
through the bars at the moment of at
tack. , 0
This would hav^beon an exciting time
for the driver, but that' individual was
personated by a dummy stuffed with
straw, which might ,prove tempting to
the tiger’s eye but would hardly satisfy
his palate. • ,
Slowly the carts moved along the
dreaded path. Suddenly there was a
roar and

could have been better planned, but one

-forgotten. No' sooner had tho tigtr
reared and botinded upon the cart than

lowed by tho other team, all ia the wild

It was impossible to fire,to il after a
few seconds of desperate chariot racing
both carts capsized, and lay, with the
animals, in a heap on the ground. The
victorious man cater, victim of what he
,must have considered a practical joke,
was left to a dry meal of a straw stuffed
carter, instead of thevjuicy native he

cost fifty dollars, but an artist who
makes a specialty of them rays, "They

noh." And so one must pay no tuore
than that in this conntry.

gem. Tho latter is simply a result of

some foreign substance. Tims, if a
minute grain of sand finds its way into
tho shell, the animal will immediately
envelop© it with a nacreous of pearly
coating, which if continued results in a
perfect gem. The pearls attached to
the shells are layers of nacro heaped up
to prevent the onward march of a boring
parasite seeking entrance from without.
In Ceylon 17,000,000 pearl oysters were
destroyed lately to produce ^80,000 iu
