OJI^SC Have Unusaaf Record Midway MaHeas Are Winners In Ihe Eastern Carolina Touroey The Midway maidens, coached by Ford R Stanton, superintendent of the Midway High school in Kershaw county, won the 14th annual Greater Eastern Carolina basketball tournament at Timjnonsville by defeating Macedonia High 4Z to 33 in the final game Tuesday night This Midway team, coming from a high school with but n girls en rolled. rates as one af the best, if not the best high school girls cage team in South Carolina. In teresting data regarding this “won der team” shows that th» average age of the 27 girls squad is IS years. During the season the team played SS games and' won 31/ In regular season competition they won 21 games, they lost g prac tice game early In the season but came hack to wipe that out later by a wide score. .They also played In 12 tournament games and won 11. The lone defeat waa wiped out in the TimmonsvlUe tourna ment when Midway walloped Mace donia 42 to 33 after Macedonia had downed Hannah (previous victor over Midway) 61 to 51. In addition to winning the Great er Eastern title, Midway placed two players on the all-tournament team—Charlotte Hall, 14-year-old forward, who posted a total of '701 points during the currant season, and her sister, Janet Hall, named as captain of the team. The two completing their cage careers are; Judy Young, a forward, and Janet Hall, a guard. Experts who have seen Janet play declare she richly deserves the honor of being one of the beet girl, guards in the country. Stanton has a forward coming up next year who Is re ported to be a sensation, but be will have -trouble Ailing Janet Hall’s shoes. The Greater Esetern Carolina tournament at TimmonsvlUe fea tured B and C schools. There were ,30 boys* teams and 27 girls' teams competing, making it the biggest event of Its kind in the south. In winning the tournament and title Midway disposed of Jeferson 48 to 37, Zion 63 to 43, Smoaks 48 to 44 and Macedonia 43 to S3. A suggestion that the Midway girls meet the Camden High school maidens, 1960 A and AA champs, in a game for the benefit of the Kershaw County Red Cross chap ter received a quick approval from Coach Stanton of Midway. Such a game would jam the Camden High gymnasium as both teams have a wide following and the followers of each are confident that their respective team would win.
