For example, by taming switch and aigmal ievera into position, and pushing a but ton. the dispatcher at Savannah can open or close a switch snd place signals in proper position 200 miles awgy at a passing track near Hamlet, so that two opposing tiains, one s passenger and one a Ireight, can pass each other, one t-ver the main line and the other via a passing track, with neither train having to atop. Controls are so devised and interlocked that it is impossible to display conflicting signals, and no change can be made in train movements until it can be made safely. Any tatlure of the equipment automatically sets the signals in a stop position, while a light oh. the automatic signal control machine Indicates some thing is wrong at a particular loca tion. The new system provides faclll- Hes to allow trains to move by sig nal indication, thereby establishing I greater flexibility with more pro* . tectlon for train' movements. The j Seaboard expects -as much time- saving and efficiency In using the new system as the road realises in the operation of cent^llsed traf fic control between Richmond. Va., and Raleigh, N. C. The 83 controlled sidings be tween Hamlet and Savannah are approximately 8 miles apart, and each Btdlng varies from 3,500 feet to 5,000 feet in length. To describe prec’sely how the new Sjaboard system operates, sig nal officers of the road gave an ex ample: The '*8ltvtr “ Star**, south bound, Is traveling at 70 mlies an hour near Camden. 8.X A fre'nht train, the “Merchan diser^, la northbound naar Co* More Slices-Bigger Savings BETTER NUTRITION WITH OUR PRIDE FRESH BREADSI lumbia, makinf 46 miles an hour. The dispatch er dec'dos that since the Mer^ chandlsar will reach the vi cinity of Weddeir around 11:27 p- nu, at which time the Silver Star is five mllos away, he will place the Merehandieer upon the pasting track to remain there until the Silver Star has gone by. The dispatcher therefore turns the lever on the panel controlling the switch at the south entrance cf the passing track at Weddell and he also turns the lever which controls the signals at the same 1'H‘atlon. Then he pre8.«»8 a button and clicking sounds come from the cutomatic signal control machine as the (^Mled electrical impulses gc over the wires to set the switch and lights in order. A few se'^onds later several more clicking tiolaes sound from the machine and lights flash on the control machine to ?tiow that the switch and signals have been set and all is in dear- iness for the Merchandiser to pro ceed .onto the passing track, which it does. The Silver Star roars on over the main line with signals set by the dispatcher to show all is clear. The Merchandiser goes at reduced bpeed over the^ssing track, and the signals and switches are so Interlocked that the Merchandiser may not enter again to the main line until the Silver Star has pass ed; however, the dispatcher has planned the meet so closely that the passenger train has aped on Its way while the freight train was moving through the passing track, feo that now, the dispatcher can open the switch and give a proceed signal to the freight train mid the Merchandiser goes back on the main line without stopping. Such non-stop passings are call^ “run ning meets." Metal Used far Vitamins Chemical snd phsrmsccuUcsI in dustries use the white precious Jew elry meUl, palladium. In the pro duction of vitamins.
