The 83 controlled sidings be

to 5,000 feet in length.

The dispatcher therefore turns
the lever on the panel controlling
the switch at the south entrance

and he also turns the lever which
controls the signals at the same

over the wires to set the switch
and lights in order. A few se'^onds
later several more clicking tiolaes
sound from the machine and lights
flash on the control machine to
?tiow that the switch and signals
have been set and all is in dear-
iness for the Merchandiser to pro
ceed .onto the passing track, which
it does.
The Silver Star roars on over the
main line with signals set by the
dispatcher to show all is clear.
The Merchandiser goes at reduced
bpeed over the^ssing track, and
the signals and switches are so
Interlocked that the Merchandiser
may not enter again to the main
line until the Silver Star has pass
ed; however, the dispatcher has
planned the meet so closely that
the passenger train has aped on Its
way while the freight train was
moving through the passing track,
feo that now, the dispatcher can
open the switch and give a proceed
signal to the freight train mid the
Merchandiser goes back on the
main line without stopping. Such
non-stop passings are call^ “run
ning meets."

Conservation Notes

Lespedexa blcolor shrubs were
planted this week by Robert A. Hall
of the Airport section, Jim Sweet
of Boykin and J. B. Cantey of
Hermitage farms, for wildlife food
and cover. W. R. Capehart, Boy
kin, has an acre (1) planting that
d five years old and states/ that
it is an excellent food crop for
quail. The district recommends
planting 1-2 (one-elghtb) sere
strips to approximate 46 acres
woodland. The stripe are to be
planted within open areas of the

of Kershaw for stocking his farm
pond. Mr. Truesdale constructed

District terracing equipment will
