The three Shebeen boys, expert in the matter of store operation will add greatly to the fine system of grocery stores and meat marketa now in the Camden business world. It has been aptly put that "as the farmer goes, S9 goes the nation”. The effect of the farmers economic condition on the nation may be indi rect but the prosperity of Camden and Kershaw county is directly de pendent upon not only the earning capacity of the local farmer but also upon the volume of work and bus iness he is able to produce. The present trend is toward less volume due to the shortage of labor. The resultant high cost of labor when compared to a narrow margin of farm profit jiaturally influences the aver age farmer to cut down the size of his operation. His efforts are devoted to producing more per acre by planting less acres. This decrease in volume of work has an adverse eiffect upon the community’s prosperity as a whole. In addition to this, the outlook for cotton in this area, as predicted by leading economists and students of commerce and agriculture, is at best one of rapidly diminishing returns during the next several years. The main reason for this Is that, in this section of the country, the ratio of cost and yield compare unfavorably with that ratio in several other cot ton producing sections. In other words, other sections can show a pro fit on cotton at prices which local farmers will lose money on. All of this adds up to the fact that local businessmen as .well as farmers should face the farmer’s problems squarely now while action Is indicat ed and not wait until the time when the lack of action is painfully appar ent Your Chamber of Commerce is mak ing a study of the process of dehy drating farm products for livestock feed.
