The A. Sheheen grocery on South
Broad str^t, conducted by A. She
been for the past 46 years, thirty-one
of which have been in its present
location, has been taken over by Mr.
Shebeen’s three sons,, FYsneis J.
Ernest and Fred, the change being
effective as of January 1st.
While the store, which is slated to
be remodeled and modernized as soon
as the necessary material can be ob
tained, is now being operated by the
Sheheen brothers, Mr. A. Sheheen is
still meeting the big army of cos*
tomers. The habits of, nearly a half
century of sterling service to a com-
ihunlty cannot be discarded in a few
short weeks and the chapees are that
patroiu of this fine store will be
happy'In the thought that they will
be able to meet their old friend for
some time to come.
Fngicis J. Sheheen has bemi affil-
iatea with his father in the active
conduct of the store during the war
years. In addition be did a magnificent
Job as cltainnan of the war time
city salvage committee.
Ernest SbMieen has just returned
from five years of service, of which
over two years were on overseas duty.'
He returned with the rank of majfw.
Fred Sheheen also saw service for
five years, a majority of his time
being spent in the European theater.
He returned with the rank of cap
tain.
The three Shebeen boys, expert in
the matter of store operation will add
greatly to the fine system of grocery
stores and meat marketa now in the
Camden business world.
Following the remodeling and re
novating of the store, the Sheheen
brothers plan to operate it as a semi
service establishment.

Notes From Chamber
Of Commerce
Ehrery pdrson In an agricultural
community is vitally concerned wjth
the present condition and future pros
pects of the farmers of that commun
ity. It has been aptly put that "as
the farmer goes, S9 goes the nation”.
The effect of the farmers economic
condition on the nation may be indi
rect but the prosperity of Camden
and Kershaw county is directly de
pendent upon not only the earning
capacity of the local farmer but also
upon the volume of work and bus
iness he is able to produce.
The present trend is toward less
volume due to the shortage of labor.
The resultant high cost of labor when
compared to a narrow margin of farm
profit jiaturally influences the aver
age farmer to cut down the size of his
operation. His efforts are devoted to
producing more per acre by planting
less acres. This decrease in volume
of work has an adverse eiffect upon
the community’s prosperity as a
whole.
In addition to this, the outlook for
cotton in this area, as predicted by
leading economists and students of
commerce and agriculture, is at best
one of rapidly diminishing returns
during the next several years. The
main reason for this Is that, in this
section of the country, the ratio of
cost and yield compare unfavorably
with that ratio in several other cot
ton producing sections. In other
words, other sections can show a pro
fit on cotton at prices which local
farmers will lose money on.
All of this adds up to the fact that
local businessmen as .well as farmers
should face the farmer’s problems
squarely now while action Is indicat
ed and not wait until the time when
the lack of action is painfully appar
ent
Your Chamber of Commerce is mak
ing a study of the process of dehy
drating farm products for livestock
feed. Ehitenalve experiments along
this line have been conducted tn
Georgia and North Carolina and in'
dicatios are that this process may
provide a very substantial alternate
to the one cash crop system for local
farmers. i
