The girls are going to wear undor-clothes again this summer, reports from l'aris to the contrary notwithstanding. I asked an old negro the other day if he thought he'd make i good crop this year, and he replied in the following 'Scriptural manner: "Paul' may polish and Cyrutf may water, but 1 de irtcrease commeth from de Lawd." ' He was hitting at the text. I have never heard of a washerwoman suffering from indigestion, or a flapper complaining about the thinness of her wearing apparel, or a well-digger over-eating, or a politician carrying out his promises, or an investigating committee finding anything unfavorable to the investigated, or a dead boll weevil. I read in the papers last week where 100 newly made millionaires held a banquet in New York. The statement did not say how the 10,000 suckers who lost in the gamble spent that evening. Every time a man makes a dollar speculating as these millionaires did, somebody loses that dollar. But a pair of twins show up every minute. Conditions are improving rapidly ii. Chicago. During the past few days, I there have been only 0 men assassi- j nated, only I bombs thrown, only 17 ' robberies took place, and only 81 i other major crimes were perpetrat-j ed. The old town is certainly quiet-1 ing down. Hurrah for law and order. j Uncle Joe says he can remember the time when you could drop a marI ble down a girl's back, and it would lodge, but such "is not the situation today: the marble passes right on down unencumbered, hut a handkerchief or a lip-stick will lodge in front on somethin' or another. Well, Boys: Old South Carolina is out of debt again. I saw in the pa|H-t yesterday, where she had borrowed *4.8*s.tU.rt and paid every darn cent she owed. Hurrah for prosperity ansoforth! I wish t" inform the public that it is a mistake that I am going into politics this year. Why, the people know too many low-down things on me already, and if I were to become a candidate?it wouldn't be f> weeks till some smart aleck would tell about the bird's nest I broke up in IB (Hi. o The Mule 1 he mule is a beast of burden but he don't favor his ma or his pa, and is dangerous at the back end. He is fine for plowing and pulling waggins until he balks and when a mule balks, he becomes absolutely stationary, and no coaxing will fetch him forward or backward. He does his own thinking while in that condition and moves when he so desires. The mule was first used in Asia but was it considered very good beefsteak until the Franco-Prussia:1 war. He eats at one end and kick? a. ihe other end, and also bites cow? if they are turned a-h>ose in the pas tu re together. T|? * gentle ones are the ones that always run away and nearly kill everybody, but if a bee ever gets into the ear of your mule, why, turn him loose right then and there and go to town and buy you another mule, j They never seem to get over a bee, in their earn. # A mule thut will let you put a pair of bits in his mouth without trou-1 ble will kick the very daylight out of? you if you try to put a crupper under! his tail without ' formal notice, said ! notice should be given by beginning to pat him or her on the shoulders and j keep on a-patting till yx>u reach the crupper headquarters. Adjusting cruppers has caused more deahs than cyclones. It is a great pity that mules have never been permitted to get into high horse society. But he hasn't. He is never allowed to race, nor does he | take any blue ribbons and cash prizes at county fairs, and he's always judged by his size and how much he can pull. Therefore, the mule needs the sympathy of the entire community j at all tipies. His daddy don't even loaf with him whefi he's young to seo that he's brought up right. Any man is lucky though that owns a mule that happens to have horse sense. By EJlov A. Nut, 8th, Grade. Monstrous Appetite Caused Negro's Death Rockingham, May 15.?The coroner of Richmond county, A. M. Smith, whs summoned to Hamlet Sunday morning to look into the rather sudden death of a negro, Dave Easterling. His investigations disclosed that the mnn died from natural causes. And It is little wonder that he died, if what he is said to have eaten on Saturday night is correct. He apparently was as well as usual when he sat down to supper Saturday night. He is said to have eaten 12 biscuits, a plate of fish, then ice cream and a little later several bananas. He was shortly afterwards taken ill, and died at 4 o'clock the next morning. Good Poultry Shipment The poultry car shipment made this week from Kershaw and Lancaster was very satisfactory, a total of 8,605 pounds of poultry haiving been loaded at the two places. Of this amount 2,496 pounds were loaded at Kershaw and 6,109 pounds at Lancaster. This shipment , brought in to the people of the county a total of $2,094.85. Included in the ship* jnent was 1,619 pounds of broilers, which brought thirty-eight cents per pounds for the heavy broilers and thirty-three cents per pound for the leghorn broilers. This is the third carload shipment to be made from this section this year. One * hundred and sixty different people participated in this shipment.?Lancaster News, Bees Sting Chickens To Deat^i ? Orlando, Fla., May 16.?A swarm of bees flew amuck here today, stinging 38 chickens to death and severly wounding Mrs. H. L. King when she sought to rout ^them.
