We are just plain small town folks, deeply interested In 'state, natiopul and even Inernatlonal affairs, because we have no tihrilllng Interests at homo-r-hurd? working peo ple, earning our bread and saving a I little of what we earn? reading much because we have few lighter pleasures? \ ; W a little Intolerant in some mutters, but , very matter-of-fact in our views of government and good citizenship. | And tbe point of ?mr plan ami tin point of this article is phat the high 1 . . cost ?>f living doesn't distress up b< .cause we don't live high. Our tastes I , 'arc simple; we do not think it neces sary ty show off before our neighbors; j. we 'wait on our selves and dress in a I manner suited to our earnings and we make ends meet with sitprlsliigly small incomes. None of tii" store clerks earn more than seven! v five dollars a month ; yet v V they pay rent, elotihe and feed their families, give something to the church ;in<l save a little. There are dozens of other men ill Various occupations whose earnings do not exceed one hundred dollars a mouth. II may be that t?hey ! do not live up to .the American stan dards of living so , frequently referred In by economists with axes to grind, but they do live up to the American standard of happiness and' good citizen ship. V m-v likely there is not one among it*, who would refuse a gift of a mil lion dollars. Very likely all of us feel :i little envious of the wealthy In. cities who Hvo In great houses, surrounded by servants, and possess luxuries we cannot afford. We are not philoso phers. Poverty prescribes our mode of living, and necessity tenches lis thrift. Vet we are' happy, the wealthiest cannot buy better books than we can afford, nor can they win more lovable friends. We have our work to give us content and self-respect, our school and town affairs to train us in team work. our churches and small charities t" teach us the art of unselfishness. 'bice in a while business or pleas ure takes ii-* away from home for a few days. Some of us go t? tihe great cities to buy goods. And when we come back again and tin?
