The late city council of Columbia Is undergoing some very severe criti cisms about the Mixou shortage and the stealing of the whiskey stored in the city prison. The cases are ?iml lur to those in this elty and county. In the matter of the~~Mixson shortage) there is a strong hint that Public Ac countant Vauu let Mixson get on to his findings and he got away. In this connection Mr. W. S. SweCnfcy another public accountant, has *addrv*?iid a letter to The Columbia ltecord in re ply to one of the editorials iu that paper which reads as follows: "1 have mid all your editorials care fully and if the circumstances were sueh as you report them, and for la^k of contradiction we must assume thct they are, Mr. Vaun, in withholding the Information that he possessed and allowing Mixson to further handle the city's money, committed a most unprofessional act and In justice to the reputable certified public account ants I propose to report him to the State l>oard of examiners." Mr. Vaun was the accountant who made an audit of the county treas urer's hooks and found a shortage existing there of $1,51(1.01. His re l*?rt was made out In sueh a manner that if it had ixrt been for the fact that the county commissioners called in legal adVlce the shortage would very probably have never, been dis covered, and the county would have been out this amount of money. Brother* in Sorrow. A farmer who is tired of all the free advice on how to farm has pic tured, Ui conversation, tjie kind of re ception he would receive if he should enter tile otlice of a newspaper or of some high official and tell how to run the paper or the government. His exit, in his opinion, would be swift and sudden. He was so cock sure of what, would happen to him that it was too bad to disillusion him. But the truth must prevail. Jf friend fanner, or friend any one else, should come into this otlice or any other newspaper office with an j idea that would help the paper he. would be as welcome as the flowers' of May. If it were an idea of excep tional worth the paper man would try to persuade the visit tor |to get on the payroll. Meantime, let lis assure friend far mer that he Is not the only chap who gets tons of foec advice. He may resent the preemption that every body knows how to farm except the farmer, but there are others in the -same boat. Should all the mall that comes To any' newvpnper otttcc be published ? which heaven f ocfend ? it would be pretty clear to the public that practically everybody knows how to run a newspaper except the edi tor. ?
