Wo ariived hero on the 12th ?>f March in iho land of sunshine, fruit ami flowers and found it fully up to onr oxpoctations. I tliink this the garden spot of the world. I have traveled through nearly all of tlio states and nono of them compare with California. The land here will grow anything that can be grown in any part of the world; though you have to water by irrigation. It has heen very dr^^ere for the last three years, but wells are being' bore! all around and an abundance of water is being gotten. I have bought, a walnut ranch con. taining nino and a quarter acres. The trees are fine some of them are ton inches through and are bearing. They are not full bearers. I have Other fruits in abundance ? figs, prunes, pears, apricots, neclarines, plums, grapes, oranges, olive*, quince, peaches and apples which will give me a handsome incomc in about two years, or perhaps less lime, t had to build a house on my ranch, will liavo a cement wall under house, and the cellar will be cemented, mv object in building a cellar is to have a cool pla?e to keep canned fruit. My place is about twenty rods from tho evergreen depot and a mile from Whittier depot. We aro simply charmed with this part of the country. 'In all my tra vels, T have never found a place ,1 like as well as I do this There i?n't any place that I know of whero the prospects are as bright as Whitticr's. There are about thirty oil wolls neat this place and more are being drill ed. Men are getting rich on oil New company's sell as low as ton cents per share, as soot? as they strike oil, up goes the stock. ? Then there aro other ways of making roo ney. You can get eighteen dollars j per ton for cabbage, and if well cul tivated make a hundred doihttA per! aero. Pears and beans also pay well. Yon can set out w.dnuts and other fruits and farm it until they commence to bear and mako an independent living *jn your farm. My trees nre too large to fartf the land. I paid $;W5 dol lars por acre for my ranch and I got it at a bargain. The proceeds will be about 1 1,500 por year from the walnuts, besides my other fruits which will amount to a good deal and it will be getting better every year, Don't yon think I made a gooi investment?
