THE J. C. PENNEY COMPANY A MODERN DEPARTMENT STORE Mr. F. F. Williams, Experienced Department Store Man ager, Gives Camden People the Benefit of His Exper ience ? Excellent Service and Low Prices. The J. C. Penney store in Camden was operated on March 13, 1930, and proved a success from the very start. The store attracts customers from all parts of Kershaw County, who not onlfcr spend their money in the J. C. Penney establishment but with many other merchants in the city. The store was establshed in Cam den only after a careful examination of the possibilities of this city as a .trading center. The Penney organi zation has never regretted placing the store here, because it has apparently ! filled a long-felt want in the city. The Penney Btore has as its man ager Mr. F. P. Williams, who was trained for three and a half years in the J. C. Penney store in Florence be fore he was sent to Camden. Mr. Williams krvows the kind of merchan dise the people of this section want and he has taken upon himself the reaponsifbility of keeping) a full and complete line of every kind of article a modern department store should handle. Mr. Williams was reared in Sumter 1 and, therefore, has a great many re latives and friends in this part of the sbate. Since coming to Camden Mr. Williams has identified himself with the community in no uncertain man ner. He has taken a part in all com munity enterprises and has shown himself at all times to be willing to cooperate for the good of his city and state. He is a memiber of the Cam den Chamber of Commerce and has served sometime as a direotor of this important organization. The J. C. Penney Store employs five regular clerks, and preference is ? given at all times to local people when ! positions are filled. The Penney store is well located, in the heart of the Camden business district and is one of the best known and most pop ular shopping centers in the city. This business was established a quarter of a century ago by J. L. Guy. Mr. Guy has spent thirty years of his life Tn ..he lumber^ business, the first five years of his operations were at j Blaney. Twenty five years ago Mr. Guy moved to Camden .and during , that time has. built up a good success ful business and has identified him self with the progressive element of the city. The present business was started in 1923. The company has a bout six acres for its use in the man ufacture and storage of its products. This plant furnishes employment to approximately fifty men in this sec tion and has a large pay roll as a re sult of its extensiiv* operations. The company does both wholesale and re tail business and has a goodly num ber of customers in and around Cam den in the retail end of the business. Its wholesale trade is mostly in the Eastern markets and many carloads are shipped annually. The plant is modern in every respect and every care has been taken to safeguard the interest of its employees. A number of the larger and better homes of Camden was built from lumber sup plied by this company. The company makes truck delivery direct to the i jobs for its retail customers. The ? plant is one of the outstanding: in J dustrial developments of Camfien and means much to the town from pay roll standpoint. J. L. Guy and his son, E. P. Guy, are the members of the firm. Mr. Guy has always been on the progressive side of community movements and has maintained mem bership in the Oha/mber of Com merce. E. P. Guy came into the bus iness with his father about a year and a haK ago and is assisting to further build uip the large and grow ing business of the company. Mr. Guy, Jr. is a graduate of Georgia Tech and has the interest of Camden at heart at all times.
