To circle the globe would be a big I task, and we have oo ides of attempting { it, it is traveling tome to circle the county. But we are not attempting ibis eitber--we are, however, penetra ting tbe 0<>uniy, visiting the schools, *na do not Intend to miss a single one of them Sometimes it is a kind of race to tbem before they close, so sbort has been the term of some few of tbe schools. A prominent citizen met us recently, and said be wanted to con* gratulate us upon tbe interesting school news we were giving By read ing our paper be could learn more about the schools of the county than be oould get in any other way. Well we have been giving liberally of our space to tbe schools because we regard hem as very important, and tbe dis rumination of school news will give a greater impetus to tbe cause of educa tion in our oounty W? promised this und are tying. to II ve up to our promise In one of the schools we visited last week we heard the teacher addressing >ne of the pupiis as "Ansel," another is "Mendtil" Familiar names thnse, >nd two dlstinguiBned citizens have j-en honored by having these young -tors namod for them Truesdale School vVe visited the TrueBdale school Wed uesday m>ruins. Thi? school 1* loca ted near Woskvllle Miss Sallie Mao Miller is the teacher in charge. Thin is her first year in this school. We touQd twenty-one bright boys and girls crowded Id this building, which is poorly equipped for school work, they have patent desks, but- no maps and only a very poor blackboard The building is uncomfortable and is loca ted by the side of one of the muddiest clay roads in the county. If this school is continued a new sohool building is a necessity, The patrons of this school object to consolidating with Westville school, where they have a good build ing and fine grounds. One Bohool with two teachers could accommodate all of the pupils In this district, and much better work could be done. The West ville school bulldlag is ample to ac commodate the pupils of each sohooi out is consolidation is opposed then tne next thing to do will be to build a a suitable sohool house for this school just as soon as the funds of the district will warrant it The boys and girls in *hts scUool deserve and they should have better equipment before another *?chool term oegins. Westville School. The Woatville school is located not tar from ik>e railroad. The grounds are large and level, and we have nev er pasted this school or stopped at li but what we have thought of how atirac live the premises could be made Mis* Eva BriUon is teaching this school. There Is a Ann spirt existl.g between the pupils and teachers aud pairoas. The boy. and girls in this school are very attentive to their studies and they art* as olever and woll behaved children as oan be found anywhere. We found 32 pupils present, The building has i yWo large rooms with cloak rooms and a* atnpib quanity of blackboard. Some maps are needed in this school, how ever. We were glad to tlnd conditions so favorable, and that the teacher was pleased with her sohool and all of the people pleased with the teacher. We took dinner at the home of our good friends, Mr & Mrs. K. L. Bell We were glad to tlnd Mrs. R. H. Bell, mother of Mr Luther Bell, so much improved In health. Ned'a Cre?.k School Thursday morning we visited Ned's Creek school, taught by Miss Margaret Kemp More than forty pupils arc enrolled Id this Bchool and we found something over thirty present. Miss Kemp it a good teaoher and is doing good work in this aohaol. There are enough children in the district for a two teaoher school, and if this school continues to progreau in the next year or so as it has in the past year or so, (he trustees will have lo arrange an other olasa room and elect two teach era. tie It said to the credit of the pa trons of this district, that upon their own motion they inoreaaed the special tax levy from two mills to aix mills We expeot Inoreaaed good results from this johool. Savannah School. A building wan temporarily fitted up In Bloomlngdale district No. 32 for a ?ohool thle year. ThU district wat> formed about a year ago, and a joint school wan maintained last year ThU year the trustee* are baying their own ?ohool, and an ?he time had ?lipped by when provision shoulJ have been made for a sohool house, ? nd the panic damn, they concluded that a make shift was better than no shift at all, and upon a site of Ave acres contributed for a sohool building the; fitted up <*n old structure and are accommodating about forty puplla as bast they can until next sohool term When they will do better. Mrs Alma Hilton was elected teaoher of this ?ohool, 'but as she was net well Miss Gardner was substituting for her. Buffalo School. Catoe'i are as thlok as hops In th* Buffalo seo'.lon. The Buffalo sohool ta often referred to as the tiatoe sohool Mlts Mamie Bymrl, an excellent young lady of the Shaylor's Hill seotlon of out county, Is In charge of this school Hhe appears to be "at home" in the ?ohool room We visited this sohool op our rounds last week. Thftre are enough oh I Id red In thai section for a two teaoher school, but they attend sohool rather lrregulary, There has been Improvement this year, however, and we slnoerely hope that the improv ement will continue until the ohlldren are given a fair chance to get at least a common school edubailon The peo ple in this *001100 of our county have alwayh been hotpltable and prosperous They could aooomplish almost any thing they would undertake to do for the upbuilding of their oommunlty. They have much to do In strengthening their educational facilities. Last jear M|?l took a forward ated and voted a ??fecial levy of three mills for school BuMl JfcMttilUWtoJliy Ml* dl* tr l?*t received #'00 term extension mon ey from the state board We are hope ful nt continued Improvements from tb is district We spent Thursday night at tbe home of Mr D. L. Catoe He and his brother, Mr Dick Catoe, reside near each other. They are each prosperous farmers One of the finestcribs of corn we have seen this year was that shown us by our friend, Lee Catoe While up there we did our best to per suade them to bring all of tbe pupils in their Bchool to Field Day and to come themselves Some of the chil dren up there have never seen Camden The trip would do them a world of good In an educational wav. We hope to bee them every one. Highland School Friday morning we visited Highland school, taught by Miss Juanlta Brown. This school Is also in Buffalo District No. 14. More than a score of children were at school here. They need additional equipment, which the trustees will supply them with from time to time. A larger and better ouildlng would help. Some patriotic citizens got together a year or so ago and put up a temporary building and established ibis school We houe that It will not bo long before they will have additional improvements. Abney School Mis* Matiie E. Ratteree is again in charge of the Abney school. Upon our return to Kershaw we made a brief stop here Spoke to the pupils and had something to say to the teacher about her school. An effort is being made to enlarge the library. The Abney dls trict recently increased its special levy from two to four mills for school pur poses. Something over thirty pupils are enrolled here and about twenty were present Friday. Sand Hill School. When we reached Sand Hill school the pupils were having recess. Miss Sudio Birch, the Jeacher in charge, did not have school Thursday on ac count of not being well, and the attend ance Fridnj was therefore rather small Since the first of the year, the attend ance. we learned has been good More than forty children had been enrolled op to date We expect to visit this school again soon, as we want to meet the pupils and see something more of them and their work. Buffalo No 2? Colored Bufialo No. 2 I s a colored school we passed- We stopped In for a few min utes- The attendance was ouly about a doKtn and at leant half of them were younjf men. How -bese follow* oouUl find time to go to school while seme white beys and girls much younger were tauun out of sohool to work, stag kiers u h. We do not condemn thum for trying to get an eduealion, but what should we say ot too parents who upon the slightest pretext sometimes take their chiidren out of school, occa ?lonally for a whole week at a time? The work of the school room is great ly facilitated by prompt and regular attendance The education of our boys and girls should bo made a matter of first importance. How is it with you, father and mother, is it of first impor tance, or is it a mateerof indi fferenc- ?
