Owing to the fact that the State Teachers Meeting will be held in Florence on Thursday, Friday and Saturday of the week decided upon for Field Day exercises for the public schools ot this county, it has Deen deemed advisable to change the date, making it one week earlier ? Thi? school 1* loca ted near Woskvllle Miss Sallie Mao Miller is the teacher in charge. Thin is her first year in this school. We touQd twenty-one bright boys and girls crowded Id this building, which is poorly equipped for school work, they have patent desks, but- no maps and only a very poor blackboard The building is uncomfortable and is loca ted by the side of one of the muddiest clay roads in the county. If this school is continued a new sohool building is a necessity, The patrons of this school object to consolidating with Westville school, where they have a good build ing and fine grounds. One Bohool with two teachers could accommodate all of the pupils In this district, and much better work could be done. We were glad to tlnd conditions so favorable, and that the teacher was pleased with her sohool and all of the people pleased with the teacher. We took dinner at the home of our good friends, Mr & Mrs. K. L. Bell We were glad to tlnd Mrs. R. H. Bell, mother of Mr Luther Bell, so much improved In health. Ned'a Cre?.k School Thursday morning we visited Ned's Creek school, taught by Miss Margaret Kemp More than forty pupils arc enrolled Id this Bchool and we found something over thirty present. Miss Kemp it a good teaoher and is doing good work in this aohaol. L. Catoe He and his brother, Mr Dick Catoe, reside near each other. They are each prosperous farmers One of the finestcribs of corn we have seen this year was that shown us by our friend, Lee Catoe While up there we did our best to per suade them to bring all of tbe pupils in their Bchool to Field Day and to come themselves Some of the chil dren up there have never seen Camden The trip would do them a world of good In an educational wav. We hope to bee them every one. Highland School Friday morning we visited Highland school, taught by Miss Juanlta Brown. This school Is also in Buffalo District No. 14. More than a score of children were at school here. They need additional equipment, which the trustees will supply them with from time to time. A larger and better ouildlng would help. Some patriotic citizens got together a year or so ago and put up a temporary building and established ibis school We houe that It will not bo long before they will have additional improvements. Abney School Mis* Matiie E. Ratteree is again in charge of the Abney school. Upon our return to Kershaw we made a brief stop here Spoke to the pupils and had something to say to the teacher about her school. An effort is being made to enlarge the library. The Abney dls trict recently increased its special levy from two to four mills for school pur poses. Something over thirty pupils are enrolled here and about twenty were present Friday. Sand Hill School. When we reached Sand Hill school the pupils were having recess. Miss Sudio Birch, the Jeacher in charge, did not have school Thursday on ac count of not being well, and the attend ance Fridnj was therefore rather small Since the first of the year, the attend ance. we learned has been good More than forty children had been enrolled op to date We expect to visit this school again soon, as we want to meet the pupils and see something more of them and their work. Buffalo No 2? Colored Bufialo No. 2 I s a colored school we passed- We stopped In for a few min utes- The attendance was ouly about a doKtn and at leant half of them were younjf men. The work of the school room is great ly facilitated by prompt and regular attendance The education of our boys and girls should bo made a matter of first importance. How is it with you, father and mother, is it of first impor tance, or is it a mateerof indi fferenc- ? Turnet died at the homo of hlR son, Dr. W. li Turner, In Kershaw on the 16th The remains were laid to r st at Hickory Head ohuroh near Wostvllle, where he had worshipped for years, on Satur day morning at 11 o'clock. The pass ing of these gallantold soldiers always brings sorrow. We are all oonsolous of the faot that the ranks are rapidly thinning out Their heroic deeds, how over, will never be forgotten. Mr. Turner resided In the Northern section of this county for many years He was held in high esteem by all who knew him. In his death we have lost a staunch friend.
