A STREET CARNIVAL I lived about fifteen miles from the nearest town of two thousand inhabitants called Lexington. I was eleven years old and was never in a town over half dozen times. I some times went to Lexington with my father to buy provisions and things needed on the farm. These visits were few and far apart, and, w hen they came, tlioy were a great scourer of delight to me. I thought as much < f these \ visits as some boys would of goiug to Now York. One day 1 learned from a traveler that there was to be a Street carnival ; At the din ner hour J persuaded rather to go and spend three days. Ear ly on Tuesday morning we started on ( u?* journey, Long before wereacn :d the town we heard the noise and tumult, the crv of the men at the tent doors, and saw the great ferris wheel over two hundred feet high. Oh! How jolly! To a boy just out of the country a street carnival is the greatest thing gointz. We went on the' midway and took in the side shows, rode 011 the ferris wheel and the merry-go-round. We had a fine view of the surrounding country from the towering hieyht of the ferris Wheel, over two hundred feet high. The electric display at night was very fine. About ten o'clock we went to bed, a very tired but happy boy. The next ^day my brother John and myself tried our luck in the ^shooting gallery. When we had lost a good deal of money, we decided that we had had eneough. On Thursday there was to be a trades display and the crowning of the queen. The trade display was very I fine. The prosession was about a quarter of a mile long The queen was crowned by the yoverner of the State. Early next morning we re turned home, much to my sorrow and father's and moth er's delight.
