Gonzales, editor of Tiia St.iti*, by Lieut. Governor James H. Tillman, was oue of the most atrocious crimes t hat has lelt its crin^on stain upon the fair name of our Statu. Mr Gonzn les did his utmost through the columns of his paper, to spare South Carolina the disgrace of having Jim Tillman elected Governor. That he was very aggressive no one will deny, but it must be remembered that he proved his charges. And now after five months had passed, and Tillman had taken no notice of the charges, Mr. Gouzaiee must have thought the incident closed. No reference had been made to Tillman that we can recall since. Ln^t Thursday as Mr. Gonzales was going quietly home he met Tillman, and when he had nearly passed him Tillman turned upon him and shot him down. The wound was a mortal one. Yes torday the last spark of a bril liant career was extinguished by a foul assassin. Mr. Gon zales was a courageous writer. He never feared being on the losing side, just so he believ ed his cause to be just, and when he made a statement, he was al ways ready to substan tiate it with facts. He was a valuable man to Columbia and South Carolina. A student, profound thicker and a writer of great force, he served his state nobly. He measured up to all the require ments of a conscientious and faithful editor. His death i* a distinct loss. A meeting was held in Cam den yesterday, over which Capt. W.. M, {Shannon was a*k ed to preside and Mr. C. W. Birchmore to act as Secretary, and upon motion a committee wasappointed todraft suitable resolutions of sympathy upon the death of Mr. Gonzales. The following was prepared by hem: Mr. A. E. Gonzales, Columbia, S. C. The citizens of Camden, in mass meeting assembled, here by express their profound griel and indignation at the taking of the life of the brilliant and patriotic editor of The State, and beg to extend their synv pathy to his stricken family. Thos. J. Kirk land, R. M. Kennedy, W. L. DePass. The mass meeting also in structed the above committee to procure a floral tribute to be placed upon the casket of the distinguished and fearless editor. This they have done, the words "a tribute of sym pathy and esteem from the citizens of Camden." being attached to the lovely tribute of flowers. Mr. J, M. Sowrll, the new County Supervisor, believes that every one who is liable to road duty should be compelled to pay a commutation tax in lien of working the road. In other words make the com mutation tax compulsory. In this we agree with Mr. Soweil. It really looks worse than child's play to be uwarning out" handb. So important a matter as keeping our high ways in decent condition, should be done in a more busi ness-like way. Tmc people of Kershaw county were delighted at the action of the legislature in making Hon. M. L. Smith Speaker of the house. He is possessed of a brilliant mind and will make an impartial presjdiug officer. His election to /the Speakership was an overwhelming one. This hon or has been worthily beutowed. b Mr. L M. Grist, senior mem ber of the firm of L. M. Grist & Sons, proprietors of the Yorkville Enquirer, died at his I home on the 15th inst. Just before the main erup tion, there was a loud explos ion and almost imnwliat'dv ashes began to fall and the la va began to flow down the i ^ r? of the mountain. In a f?'w minutes the city wn<( eovpnd and about thirty or forty t hou sand were dostroyed Only a few hundred of the inhabitants escaped and those were SHved by almost superhuman efforts. The coronation of King Ed ward VII of England took flace about the first of August, t was to take place in June hut he got sick and it had to be put ( ff. He was also crown ed Emperor of India by proxy at Delhi. There win a great coal strike in Pennsylvania and the west ern stages It. lasted for two or three months but was at last settled by a board of arbitrat ion. Thorp was a ' rouble bet ween England and Germany and Venezuela. Venezuela refused to nay her debts so England ana Germany seized her fleet which was in the harbor of Caracas. Castro the President, siezed all the German and En glish citizens and put them in prison- but was forced to re lease them. At the petition of the citizens of Caracas, ho a greed to pay his debts thus set tling the question. Walter Schrock. Age 16. Grade 10. frotible Erents of 1902 The year 1902 has been full of interesting events. f The first worthy of mention ing 18 ^be ?>uption of Mont telee, which occurred in May of the year mentioned. Mt. Pelee is a voleanoe in the Island of Martinique. The 9}^ Pierre is at its base. Mt. I elne was known to be a live voleanoe, but it had not acted for some time, so when a few days before the eruption noises were heard to proceed from the mountain, the citi ?^n.s ^hought nothing of it. put those noise* had dreadful import. A few days later the mountain suddenly vomited forth torrents of ashes, cinders smoke, and rock upon the town Ihese were followed by lava. , ^'10 eruption continued for the short space of 25 minutes, yetin that time 4000 lives were lost and the city of St. Pierre destroyed. Only a few hundred survivors escaped, and nearly all of them were badly burned by the hot falling mud. They described the scene as ^Glimn ses of Hell." p The next important event was the coronation of King Edward v II which was to haveoccured in June but was postponed uu ? li August on account of the king s sickness. The most important event, save one, was the coal strike It continued for two or three months and the lack of coal becamo so great that coal rose to 130 per ton. John Mitchell was the great leader of the strike and by his example the strikers held together until the mine owners agreed to arbi trate the question. This they did, by the President's advice* i ho greatest event of the year was the troublo with Venezuela.
