Pin son. Since the beginning of school he has been teaching seventh and eighth grade arithmetic. He has been called into service and will report to Air Force Pilot School in Laredo, Texas. Mr. Pinson had not planned to be a teacher, but he likes it so much that he plans to teach again after he returns from the service. Mr. Allen Smith, a native of Mobile, Alabama, will take Mr. Pinson’s place. Mr. Smith attended the University ofSouth Alabama on a golf scholarsh4>. There he was on the golf team for four years and graduated in June of this year. Ree, Mr. Smith’s wife, will graduate from Presbyterian College in May. She is an elementary educa tion major. Students at Martha Dendy Girls’ Junior High have com pleted their SCAT and STEP tests. This week they will be taking l Q. tests. Many new facilities, such as a covered walkway and side walks, have added much to the convenience of the student body. HIGHLIGHTS Monte Dutton and John Wallace From October 19-30, the ninth grade boys were kept busy taking the SCAT and STEP tests. The eighth grade boys taking advanced subjects were given some of the tests also. The STEP Tests included science, mathematics, read ing, listening, writingand social studies. The SCAT Test in cluded mathematics and voca bulary. According to most of the boys, they are glad the testing is over. Last week, October 25-31, was National Vocational Gui dance Week. Several boys help ed our counselors, Mrs. Alvenes Barksdale,to do a very attractive bulletin board using the national theme - "It’s your future, prepare for it.” Mrs. Barksdale also sponsored a poster contest, and the win ners were: Aaron Morris - 1st place, William Walker - 2nd, and Mike Koon - 3rd. A film on vocations was to have been shown, but it had to be scheduled for a later date be cause of the testing in the school. Various types of career materials were displayed. Harold Williams', 'coach of the Kid Devils’ basketball team, seems understandably optimis tic about Bell Street’s basket ball hopes for the upcoming year. Coach Williams com mented, “We are looking for ward to having a very good basketball team. The booth saluted South Carolina’s tricentennial celebration. Club girls entered a variety of baked goods in the Junior Foods division and were the receipients of many first and second place awards. The work on the booth and the baked goods was the pro duct of the Whitten Village children with their teachers, Mrs. Vida Dailey, Mrs. Mary Ross Martin, and Mrs. Eunice Boone supervising and helping them with any delicate work ne*"' -d.
