She is a graduate of Bell Street High School and the dau ghter of Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Simpson of Friendship Drive. Miss Barbara Smith spent the week-end at South Caro lina State College with her sis ter, Miss Selma Smith a junior (instead of a Sophomore as stated in a recent issue). While in the city of Orangeburg they witnessed the football game of S. C. State vs. Albany State, Ga. Mr. James Kennedy and dau ghter Valarle, Miss Lula A. Kennedy of Greer, S. C. also Mr. and Mrs. Luther Carter Of Charlotte, N. C. were calletd to the city on Saturday due to the illness of their sister and aunt, Mrs. Rosa Mae Fergu son. On Monday, Mrs. Fergu son was admitted to Bailey Memorial Hospital. Miss Bathsheba Watts a student at S. C. Area Trade School, Denmark, S. C. spent the week-end with her family on South Bell Street Miss Mamie Wilson has re turned to her home on South Bell Street Circle after a few weeks stay in Jamacia, New York with her sister and family. Smith who passed recently. CLUB MEETS The Ladles Alert Club met on Tuesday evening at the home of Mrs. Azalee Sanders on Tribble Street. During the devotion, conduct ed by the chaplain Miss Lucille Dillard each member repeated a Bible verse. Beginning with the alphabet O. The club creed was recited in unison. During the business session plans were begun for a “Car Contest* to be held on Dec ember 6. The hostess assisted by Miss Christine Miller and Miss Claire Wilson served a very tasteful and enjoyable repast. The next meeting will be with Miss Eva Sanders on South Bell Street TROOP 178 QUALIFIES FOR AWARDS The members of Boy Scout Troop 178 of Clinton, S. C. re cently qualified for the National Camping Award. This award was received for their ten days and nights of camping out On the 24th of October, 26 young scouters along with Scoutmaster, Clyde Lindsay, Jr. and Asst Scoutmasters, Eddie Redd, Jr. and Thomas Cheeks hiked a total of 17 miles. The hike beginning from Friendship A. M. E. Church to Bailey Memorial HospitaL Continuing on Highway 56 a- round to Joanna and back to Clinton by way of Highway 76. This hike took exactly five and half hours to help qualify for the hiking award. COMING EVENTS The Beams of Heaven and The Mellow-Tones Quartets will appear at Mount Moriah Baptist Church, Sunday, Nov ember 1 at 7:30 p.m. Admis sion is free but a free-will offering will be taken. People receiving social security bene fits take only one. This test is ctflled the “retirement test’ Mr. J. E. Gunter, Field Re presentative of the Greenwood, S. C. Social Security Office stated thatthose who earn$1680 or less in a calendar year antomatically pass the test Additional information is need ed from those earning over $1680 to determine if they pass the test Mr. Gunter pointed out that beneficiaries who realize they will earn over $1680 this year •hould tell social security at once, if they have not already made this report At the same time they should give an esti mate of the total earnings for 1970. After December 31,1970 beneficiaries earning over $1680 this year are required to file an annual report of their earnings with Social Security by April 15,1971. Earnings of over $1680 mean you may not be due a social security check for each month this year. Your estimate of earnings allows social security to make necessary adjustments in your monthly checks to keep you from being overpaid. The annual report of earnings is needed to determine the accuracy of your estimate. If you make more than you esti mate, chances are you will be overpaid. If you make less than you estimate social security may owe you money. Mr. Gunter closed with these words of advice: “When in doubt always over-estimate your earnings. We have found it is much easier for social security to pay you than it is for you to pay social security benefits back or to have money withheld from fu ture checks’.
