As the world becomes more and more dependent upon electronic devices, what I am iflbout to report could happen. It a condensation of an article which appeared in ‘Music", the official magazine of the Ameri can Guild of Organists. A New York Church, it seems, supplemented its meager re sources of a small electronic organ by wiring a tape deck to the speaker system and playing recorded recitals of great or ganists on great instruments before and after the service. The church purchased several decks plus a modest library of famous organists. So well were the organ re cordings received that an ex tension to choral music was soon suggested. A library was collected from the great choirs. The local choir continued to sing but on a greatly reduced scale. This arrangement proved so sat isfactory that the hymns sounded so poorly in comparison that the church board recommended abolishing the choir and organist in favor of all recorded music. At the same time funds were voted by the church board to up grade the sound system and add visual stimulation in the now vacant chancel. The old audio tapes were replaced with video tapes. A large closed-circuit television screen was hung in the chancel from henceforward professional choirs appeared at all services in living color. The music problem was now solved. With so much money tied up, the church board felt obliged to find additional use for equip ment. The minister, thought a careful shepherd and worthy ad ministrator was less than in spired in homiletics. Further more, his preparations usurped 1 valuable time from parish calls and office duties. The committee therefore selected a large variety of taped sermons, to suit seasonal and special needs. To prepare the week’s sermon the minister had merely to choose a tape and give it to the electronics technician who had been hired to replace the organ ist. The minister enjoyed his new found freedom. With his liturgi cal and preaching duties now handled automatically, it was a simple matter to add t^jed pray ers and scripture lessons, rend ering ministerial presence at services totally unnecessary. While the narrate is ima ginary, it could happen. To complete the electronic arrangements, the church board bought a small computer and programmed it with rules for guiding seasonal selection of hymns and scripture readings; fed it all the tapes and turned it on.
