Dr. and Mrs. William Calhoun Smith of Urbanca, 111. and Mrs. George E. Simmons of Char lotte spent Sunday with their aunt, Mrs. Hugh Simpson. Mrs. Nelle Bowman, Kenneth Bowmin and Karen Bowman of Warner Robins, Ga. spent a weekend recently with the for mer’s parents, Mr. and Mrs.S. B. Loftis. They all attended the homecoming at Motlow Creek Church, Campbello, enjoying the sermon by a former pastor, Dr. E. F. Haight, of Baptist College at Charleston. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bol linger and children, Donal Sheryl and Bobby left Friday for Derry, Penn., after spend ing 10 days with Mrs. Bolling er’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. B. Loftis. The Bollingers are making their home in Ft. Lau derdale, Fla. Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Duvall and daughter, Billie Sue visit ed Mr. and Mrs. Homer Jones and Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Holland over the weekend. W. Barnette. Mrs. R. C. Adair, Sr. spent Saturday night with Mr. W. B. Leamon in Asheville. Mr. J. H. Von Hollen and Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Crocker of Joanna have just returned from an interesting two week western trip. This was the first trip west for 85 year old Mr. Von Hollen. The Oliver Greens of Merrie Oaks spent their vacation in Florida. Mrs. Jerry TIbbitts and Mr. and Mrs. James Von Hollen went to Atlanta for the weekend. They attended the wedding of Mrs. K. D. Bickers’ son. Mrs. Bickers is a former Clintonian. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Bod mer and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Casque spent the weekend in Atlanta and attended a Braves game Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Glazer Harvey from Cross and Mr. and Mrs. P.M. Dennis from Newberry are spending a week at Lake Green wood with Mrs. Roy Casque. Miss Agnes Davis, Mrs. Ray mond Pitts, Mrs. J. B. Hart, Mrs. Robert Wilder and Mrs. Frances O’Daniel attended the play ‘Miss Pell is Missing* at the Flatrock Playhouse. Miss Pam Shook had a significant part in the play. Mrs. Russell Emerson and Mrs. David Roberts visited with Miss Kay Roberts last week in Atlanta. Joining them for the weekend were Mr. Roberts and Mr. Emerson. Broad casters Association at the lat ter’s convention in Charleston this week. Dr. Brown is an ho norary member of the associa tion and for the past nine years has served on a committee which selects recipients of col lege scholarships given by the broadcasters. Mr. and Mrs. James Robert Cox, Linwood, Robbie Kate, Mi chelle, Jane Etta and Alicia Leigh spent the weekend in Co lumbia. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Wells, Sr. had as their guest on Sunday, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Hodge of Ware Shoals. Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Moore of Asheville, N. C. visited Mr. Moore’s sister. Mrs. C. Roy Jenkins and Mr. Jenkins. Mrs. Moore remained tobe with Mrs. Jenkins who underwent surgery on Wednesday. Dr. and Mrs. Lee A. Blake ly Jr., and children of Spring- field, Va., have returned home after a week’s visit with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Add Blakely. Michael R. Wickham, who is a student at Berry College in Rome, Ga., has been elected to the Phi Alpha Theta Internat ional Fraternity, Omicron Ep silon Chapter, which is an honor society for history students. Mr. Wickham, who is a senior, has been selected as the Editor of Ramifications, the Berry College literary year book, for the 1970-71 school year. Mrs. Lora Wickham, wife of Michael, is the art editor for the publication. Michael is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Wickham and Lora the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. William Schroeder of Marcay, Venezuela. Mr. and Mrs. Dean Luehrs and Deanne from Medford, Ore. were visitors of Mrs. A. I Dixon and Mrs. Mary Alice Tay lor recently. On Sunday, Mrs. Dixon had as guests, Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Dixon and children, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Dixon and daughter, Mr. Hugh Young of Clinton, and Mr. and Mrs. Homer Gantt of Greenville and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Copeland and children of Charlotte, Wade GeerofShelby, N. Dailey of Clinton, who suffered a heart attack three weeks ago has re turned home and doing nicely. Friends of Joe Holland will be interested to learn that he is out of the hospital and is con valescing at Lake Greenwood. On Friday, Mr. and Mrs. McKee and Frank McKee at tended the Hedden-Dowdeswell wedding and reception in Spar tanburg. They were accompan ied by Mr. and Mrs. Evans. On Thursday, Mrs. Evans, Mrs. McKee and daughter, Julia Mc Kee of Atlanta, attended the bridesmaid luncheon given for Miss Eugenia Dedden at the Pine Crest Inn in Tryon, N. C. Miss Julia McKee was a bridesmaid at the wedding. Mr. and Mrs. John Roseboro joined her sister, Mrs. Everett Carson and Mr. Carson in Gas tonia, N. C. and together they spent several days last week in Bon darken. Hedden- Dowdeswell Miss Eugenia Hedden became the bride of Dr. Robert Horton Dowdeswell in a ceremony at First Presbyterian Church, Spartanburg, Friday evening at 8. Officiating ministers were Dr. Frederick Poag and Hie Rev. Henry Keating. The bride’s parents, Dr. and Mrs. Julius Clyde Hedden, entertained with a reception at Spartanburg Country Club. Dr. Dowdeswell, son of Mrs. Milton Richard Dowdeswell of 361 Mills Ave. and the late Mr. Dowdeswell, will intern at Med ical University Hospital in Charleston beginning July 1. Appliques of alencon lace trimmed the 'bride’s formal length white peau de soie gown. The A-line skirt and Cathedral length train had deep lace in serts. She wore her 'Brussels lace cathedral length veil man tilla style. Honor attendants were the bride's sister, Lucy Margaret, and her sister-in-law, Mrs. Julius Clyde Hedden, Jr. of Charleston. They wore instep length sleeveless yellow pique dresses with Victorian neck lines trimmed in Veniselace. Their headdresses were Gibson girl style bows with Veniselace trim. Miss Priscilla Ann West of Gainesville, Fla., and Miss Julia Frances McKee of Atlanta cousins of the bride,attended as bridesmaids with Mrs. Richard Felder Cecil Jr. of Columbia and Mrs. John Frank Bivens Jr. of Winston-Salem. They were dressed like the honor atten dants. Peter Crispin Spencer of Anderson attended the bride groom as best man. Serving as groomsmen with the bridegroom’s brothers, Jo hn Warren and Milton Richard Jr., and the bride’s brother Julius Clyde Jr. of Charleston, were Dr. Harland Albert §t- resing of Charleston and Car- lee Thomas McClendon of Col umbia. Leslie Marmaduke Teel of Bluffton and Dr. Samuel Preston Fleming were senior ushers. After a wedding trip to Hil ton Head, Dr. and Mrs. Dow deswell will make their home in Charleston. Mrs. Dowdeswell, who was presented by the Spartanburg Debutante Club in 1962, has! been employed for two and one- half years as research librarian with Coca-Cola USA in Atlanta. She was graduated from Spart anburg High School, Mary Bald win College inStaunton, Va., and Katherine Gibbs School in New York. She is the daughter of the former, Miss Jean McKee and granddaughter of Mrs. J. D. Mc Kee, Sr. of Clinton. Dr. Dowdeswell received an M. D. degree from Medical Uni versity of South Carolina in Charleston. He was graduated from Spartanburg High School and University of South Car olina. The number of women in ap prenticeship programs regis tered with the Labor Depart ment rose to 1,800 in 1969, an over-the-year increase of 72 percent.
