Joanna Baptist Church Groundbreaking Ceremony On Sunday, July 20, building committee chair man Harold Murphy turned the first shovelful of dirt to mark the beginning of construction of the new sanctuary of the First Baptist Church, Joanna. The old building was destroyed by fire on the night of May 30, 1%8. Others identified in the first row who were present for the ceremony are (from left to right) : L. Byron Harbin, pastor; Louis H. Contract has been awardee! to Cannon Con struction ompany of Newberry at an approximate cost of $333,000.00 and should be completed within 360 calendar days. Clintonian Almost Steps On 20-Lb. Rattlesnake During night maneuvers at Fort Stewart, Ga., recently, a Clin tonian almost stepped on a 20- pound rattlesnake which was six feet, three inches long. 45 Wild Fires Burn 207 Acres The annual meeting of the Lau rens County Forestry Board was held recently to review the S. C. State Commission of Forestry’s program in the county, according to Legare M. Duke, District For ester of the Newberry District. Highlights of Forestry Com mission activities and ac complishments in forest fire pre vention and control, reforesta tion and forest management as sistance programs during the past fiscal year were given. In summarizing the fire control activities, it was noted that 45 wild fires burned 207.8 acres. This compares with 78 wildfires that burned 630.0 acres during tiie same period last year. Memt>ers present at the Board meeting were Chairman Tan M. Ray, Earl Abercrombie, J. T. Hollingsworth and Capers W. Knight. Pfc. Charles Cannon, training with the 2nd Platoon of the Whit mire Unit of A Co. 4 Bn., 118th Mech. Inf., was running a night phase of attack with the platoon on July 10 when he came on the big snake. The 2nd Squad sur rounded the snake and Lt. James L. Ward of Saluda eot in the cir cle with the rattler and killed it in midair as it struck at him. The snake was 11 and three- fourths inches around. It was skinned and dressed out and the meat was given to Brig. Gen. Shimer, assistant com mander of the 30th Infantry Di vision. The skin was tanned and treated and will be kept at the Whitmire National Guard Armory. Leesville Hosts Revival services are continu ing at Leesville Southern Metho dist Church at 8 each evening. The regular services will be held Sunday with Church School at 10 a.m. and preaching at 11 a.m. The pastor, Rev. Charles F. BIG RATTLER—Pfc. Pitts Sr. while here he was joined by his wife, Mrs. D. T. Pitts Jr. of Decatur, Ga. Shady Grove Home Extension Registration Board Office Moved The Laurens County Registra tion Board’s Office has been moved from the county court house to the Powe Drug Co. build ing in Laurens. The Laurens County Board of Commissioners decided at its July 15 meeting to move the Re gistration Board office to make room for the second probation officer that has been assigned to the county. The move was made on July 17. The Registration Board, in its new quarters across the street from the courthouse, will observe the same office hours as the courthouse offices. Supervisor Furman E. Thoma son commented, “It is felt that the new quarters of the Regis tration Board will really be mure convenient for the citizens to re gister, particularly the elderly people in that they will not have to climb the steps.” The commissioners also have assigned to the Civil and Family Court the space on the court house second floor formerly oc cupied by the ladies’lounge. Cal vin Bridges, Civil and Family Court Judge, will move intothese quarters as soon as the neces sary furnishings can tie placed in the office. Ladies enjoyed a visit to Rose Hill Saturday afternoon. After a tour of the house and grounds they enjoyed a picnic lunch on the grounds. Miss' Martha Pitts is spending some time in Rock Hill, S. C. Wander Spivey is visiting her sister Margie Spivey in Fountain Inn. Mrs. Helen Bryant and her son, James H. Berry of Arling ton, Va., visited Mr. Berry’s daughter Cathy Berry last Sun day. Mrs. Gladys Prater and son, Michael were recent visitors of Mrs. Prater’s mother, Mrs. Maggie Marshall. Miss Cathy Berry left Tues day for Clemson University fur the State 4-11 Convention. Cathy was selected to attend the Conference from her project in Home Management. Cathy will be a junior at Clinton HighSchool next session and has tieen a mem ber of Shady Grove 4-H Club for a number of years. She re cently served as President of the club. Rev. Alfred Fisher from Cow Pens was guest speaker for wor ship service at Fairview Baptist Church Sunday. JODIE GALLOWAY Galloway Wins Trip To Europe Horace Mann Insurance Group has awarded Jodie Galloway with a two week trip to Europe. He qualified for the trip by ranking among the top 40 agents in the nation with the company for the 1968-69 production year. The 40 top agents and their wives will leave July 27 for the 1969 Horace Mann Sales Con vention in London. Tours of Lon don are also scheduled. Other cities on the tour agenda are Stockholm, Sweden; Copenhagen, Denmark; Amsterdam, Holland; Dublin, Killarney, and Limerick, Ireland. Mr. Galloway resides in North Augusta, S.
