Telephone 276-2884 $40,000 Asked For Seminar On Delinquency GREENWOOD - The Upper Sa vannah Development District has made application to the Depart ment of Health, Education, and Welfare for approximately $40,000 to conduct an advanced training seminar for the prevent ion and control of Juvenile De linquency. The Upper Savannah’s Exe cutive Director, Dan B. Mackey, II, said that this application was made under Title II of the Ju venile Delinquency Prevention and Control Act of 1968. Mackey stated that this is a District pro ject which will provide additional quality training for persons either employed by agencies serving delinquent youth or em ployed in providing preventive services for youth in danger of becoming delinquent. This training program is con sistent with the recommendations of the District Law Enforcement Task Force which studies crimi nal administration and juvenile delinquency in the six counties of Abbeville, Edgefield, Greenwood, Laurens, McCormick, and Sa luda. The facilities of Piedmont Technical Education Center will be the site of the training semi nar, and professional staff of TEC will assist in this project. Pied mont TEC and the Upper Savan nah will choose a special ad visory committee whose respon sibility will be choosing the train ing techniques and course curri culum which will provide modern applications and stimulus for this program. This application was encourag ed by area agencies and insti tutions, businesses, schools, churches, Community Actions, mental health center, the Office of the Governor which deals in the the prevention and control of juvenile delinquency, family court systems, Department of Public Health, and municipal and county organizations. The seminar will lie conducted one day a month over an eight- month period and approximately 100 District participants will be enrolled. The seminar is an ticipated to begin in September or October. Instructors will come from throughout the United States to present new concepts in en vironmental sciences; they will describe how social and economic factors are part of the problem of juvenile delinquency, profess ional guidance and counseling will be stressed as will be the re habilitation process and train ing of these youth. The seminar will also stress the importance of public andprivate agencies be coming more aware that their participation and understanding are necessary to effectivelypre- vent and control juvenile delin quency in the Upper Savannah.
