Oliver Williamson and Mr. and Mrs. Ted Harvey ofPelser visit ed Mrs. Mattie Stroud onSunday. Last Tuesday Mrs. Rosa Hughey and Mrs. Ruth Burns and son Phil of Travelers Rest were her guests. The Buddy Coats family of Newberry were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. James Bodie. Mr. Bodie is recuperating at his home after being a patient at the local hospital. On Wednesday, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Coats of Newberry visited Mr. and Mrs. Harold Gardner. JOINS NAVY Ricky Gardner will leave for Orlando, Fla., on Tuesday, March 11 where he will begin his 13 weeks of basic training. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold L. Gardner. Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Kitchens and infant daughter, Kristi, of Warner Robins, Ga., enjoyed two weeks with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gene C raven. S/Sgt. Kitchens was here for the weekend and they re turned on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Boyce and Amy of Martinsville, Va., spent the weekend with their par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Marion Boyce and Mr. and Mrs. Morris John son. Weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Bragg were Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Bragg and family of Aiken. HOSPITAL NEWS T. G. Murphy entered the Bai- Dial 697-6949 ley Memorial Hospital last Wed nesday. Roy Boyce entered the Seif Me morial Hospital in Greenwood. Mrs. Nichlas Kramm was rushed to the hospital on Sunday afternoon. CARD OF THANKS I wish to thank the doctors and the hospital staff for the at tention they gave me while a pa tient at the local hospital for the past month. James Bodie BIRTHS WICKER Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Wicker announce the birth of a daugh ter, Carole Renee, on Feb. 17 at the Bailey Memorial Hospital. She is the former Helen Carole Gregory of Lydia Mill. The infant makes a 5th generation on the father’s side of the family. WOMAN'S CLUB The Joanna Woman’s Club will meet Thursday (tonight) at 7:30 at the Joanna Club House. All members are urged to attend as the Nashville trip to see the Grand Ole Opra will be discussed. Robert G. Johnston, rising sen ior from Columbus, Ga., is the new president, succeeding Rich ard Query of Mount Pleasant. The other senior representatives are Duncan B. McFayden of Rae- ford, N.C., vice-president, and William A. Bryant, Jr., of Quin cy, Fla. Miss Tommie Ellis of Green ville, newly elected SGA secre tary, heads the group of junior class representatives who also include Ben H. Gregg Jr., of Flo rence and James C. Shaw ofSum- ter. White Enrolled In Merchant Marine School Julian William White, HI, son of Mr. and Mrs. Julian William White, Jr., 300 Milton Road, Jo anna, is currently enrolled as a student in the Calhoon M.E.B.A. Engineering School to learn to be come a licensed engineer in the United States Merchant Marine. Located in Baltimore, Mary land, the school began its third year of operation on October 1, 1968. Because of the extreme shortage of licensed engineers aboard American-flag merchant vessels, it was established in 1966 by the National Marine En gineers’ Beneficial Association (AFL - CIO) and is financed by the shipowners in an agreement with the engineers’ union About 600 young men are pre sently enrolled in the two-year course which begins with six months of classroom training, followed by a year as an appren tice aboard an American mer chant vessel, and then another six months in classroom. All the time a young man is undergoing train ing, he is paid $200 per month and provided with lodging and meals at the school’s headquar ters in a former downtown hotel in Baltimore. The school is lo cated in Maryland because of the influence of Representative Ed ward A. Garmatz (D., Md.), Chairman of the House Merchant Marine and Fisheries Commit tee. * * ♦ Wilder Named To S.C. Press Exec. Committee Donny Wilder, editor and publisher of The Clinton Chron icle, has been named to the Executive Committee oftheSouth Carolina Press Association. Vance, were promoted to Eaple Scout rank at a recent Court of Honor. Bailey & Son, Bankers, Building Shelton Operates Ambulance Service For Clinton Area Calvin Shelton is now operat ing an ambulance service for the Clinton-Joanna-Cross Hill area. Shelton purchased the am bulance service from Gray Funeral Home, for which he has been working on a part-time basis previously. Shelton, assistant overseer at the Bailey Plant, moved to Clin ton in 1966 after operating an ambulance service in Fountain Inn for seven years. He is a qua lified first aid instructor. John Stancil will operate the service from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. each day and Shelton will operate it from 5 p.m. until 8 a.m. JOHNNY PEAKE Peake Participates In Korean Exercise Pfc. Johnny Peake of Clinton recently participated in maneuv ers at Camp Casey, Korea.
