While Penguins cannot fly in the air, they do, however, “fly” in the wat'.r, at speeds up to 30 miles an hour. While swimming, they can dive with a thrust of their flippers and travel 30 feet underwater before surfacing. Pen guins differ from most other birds in that their feathers cover the body completely and are so small they look like scales. Densely packed together, the feathers shed water and help keep the birds warm. Penguins spend most of their lives in the water. Why do you blow out the candles on your birthday cake? When you blow out the candles on your birthday cake, you are following a very old custom. People used to believe that by blowing out birthday candles they were blowing away all the bad luck of past years. That is why there is a candle for every year. Where do pearls come from? To produce a cultured pearl, a smooth round bead of mother-of- pearl is skillfully set into the liv ing tissue of a pearl oyster. Then the oyster is returned to the water for 3 to 5 years. The cultured pearls that are produced are less expensive than natural ones, but only an expert can tell the differ ence between them. What is an allergy?
