HOW CAN I? BY ANNE ASHLEY Q. How can I make a good job of removing the old finish from furniture prior to refinish- ing? A. Use paint or.varnish re mover, obtainable at any paint or hardware store. If a tinge of the old paint remains, mix two tablespoons of oxalic acid with a quart of water, douse this on the furniture with a brush, and let stay for 15 minutes before rinsing with plain water. This will bleach the wood to its natural color. WARNING: Protect your hands with rubber gloves, and avoid splashing yourself! Q. How can I clean and whiten meat boards and bread boards that have become discolored? A. Try rubbing over them with the inside of a lemon rind, fol lowing this with a clear warm- water washing. Q. How can I prevent the crust of a meat pie from absorbing the gravy? A. Gravy will not soak through the lower crust of your meat pie if the white of egg is brushed over the crust. Q. How can I remove light scorch stains from linens? A. Wet the affected area with cold water, then expose to the sun until the stain disappears. It may be necessary to repeat the wet ting process several times. And, of course, if the stain happens to be burnt into the goods too much -- this won’t work. Q. How can I brighten up the gold patterns on my dishes which have become dingy-looking? A. Scrub with a dry tooth brush dipped in bicarbonate of soda. Or, use a moist tooth brush in powdered alum. Let the A thug on a housebreaking spree, Reached into a bureau with glee; But to his chagrin, The "loot” found therein, Was fust a Deposit Box Key! These stains usually yield to treatment with carbon tetra chloride. Q. How can 1 remove candle grease that has spattered over black suede shoes? A. Cover the greasy areas with brown wrapping paper, then hold a warm iron over the paper and the spots will be absorbed. Many other such tips on the care and cleaning of shoes and clothing are contained in my new book. Q. How can I perk up life less-looking cloth artificial flow ers? A. By dunking them into a starch solution. You might add cake coloring or dye to the starch solution. You might add cake col oring or dye to the starch and, after dipping the flowers, hang them head-down to dry. BY SALLY SHAW DEAR SALLY: I am a widow of 35, with two darling children ages 7 and 9. I’ve been going with a man of 37 who has never been married, but who wants to marry me. The only thing that makes me hold back is his seem ing impatience with my children. He never pays them any extra attention, and too often indicates that they get on his nerves. May be this is due to the fact that he has lived alone so long and is just not used to children -- and ma; * he’ll change after we’re married. I love my child ren dearly, and want them al ways to be happy. Do you think, under the conditions I’ve stated, I should go ahead and marry this man? NEBRASKA. DEAR NEBRASKA: If your children get on this man’s nerves now, I can’t see that marriage will change his attitude at all. Your life, and that of your child ren, could well be miserable. And I have an idea you were thinking along the same lines before you wrote to me. DEAR SALLY: My wife be lieves that it’s the sole duty of the father to wield the whip when it comes to dishing out punishment to the kids. Many evenings, when I arrive home from work, she will give me a detailed account of some for bidden bit of mischief one or both of our kids got into earlier during the day, and then I’m sup posed to give them “what they deserve." What do you think a- bout this? PETE. DEAR PETE: The most ef fective kind of punishment for children is the kind that's dealt out promptly, when the “crime” is fresh in their minds -- and not maybe hours later when Dad comes home. And also, the dis ciplining of children should be shared by BOTH parents, not made the task of just one of them. DEAR SALLY: I’m a girl of 17, have been going steady with a boy of 18 for five months, want very much to break off with him, jut don't know how to go about it. I have discovered that I don't love him one little bit --buthe’s I I I an exceptionally nice fellow, ex tremely sensitive, and I’m sure that if I were to tell him that everything is over between us he would go to pieces. I don’t want to hurt him this way. I have discussed this with any num ber of my girl friends, but none of them has a good answer. Can you help me? STRAPPED. DEAR STRAPPED: How incon sistent can you be? On the one hand you state your aversion to hurting the boy’s feelings, yet on the other hand you’ve con fided to any number of your girl friends your wishes to unload him. That is really “hurting" him! If you really want to break up, tell him as kindly as you can, but firmly, that you don't want to go steady anymore. I’m sure he’ll survive.
