Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Campbell and Mr. and Mrs. Mike Campbell returned home after the holidays. Devon Graham spent the week end in Jacksonville, Florida. Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Garner Jr., and Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Knox and daughter of Chester, Mrs. Francis Busbee and Mrs. Bud Carr and children from Aiken and Mr. and Mrs. Leon Hedgepath of Atlanta, Ga., spent the holidays with Mr. and Mrs. Robert Whitsel and other rela tives. Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Robert son of Greenville and Mr. and Mrs. Freddie Heaton of Laurens visited Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Heaton during Christmas. Friends of Mrs. Edna Heaton will be interested to know that she returned to work on Friday after being out with a broken leg. Cadet Ronald Turner returned to the Citadel in Charleston on Sunday to resume his studies after spending the Christmas holidays with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Turner. Author Lawson and sons, Joel and Stanley, and Ronald Turner visited Mrs. Minnie Turner in Lexington last Monday. Guest of Mr. and Mrs. Author Lawson several days last week was Cadet Ronald Turner of the Citadel in Charleston. DISTRICT CONVENTION The Third District Convention is to be held at the Church of God of Prophecy on Sloan Street on January 17 from 9 a.m. until 10 p.m. The public is invited. CHRISTMAS DINNER Mrs. Ada Center, Mrs. Vesta Mae Eubanks, Miss Bessie Holtz- claw gave a Christmas dinner for their families on Christmas Eve. After dinner all gathered in the living room, singing carols and exchanging gifts. An enjoy able day was enjoyed by all. Those enjoying the occasion was Rev. and Mrs. James T. Hughes and Iris of this city. BIRTH BLACKWELL Mr. and Mrs. Bryan Blackwell announced the birth of a daugh ter on December 29 at Bailey Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Black- well was before marriage, Miss Gail Foster, daughter of Paul Foster. SICKNESS Mrs. Cora King underwent sur gery on Monday at Bailey Me morial Hospital. Roy Kennedy is a patient at Bailey Memorial Hospital. Among those who have been ill with a virus are Mrs. Annie Mae Caughman, Mrs. Mary Ellen Ward, and James Caughman. Mrs. B. B. Stroud has been ill at her home. Gene Floyd of Greenwood has been ill with the virus. Mrs. William Dominick is sick at her home. Debbie Turner of Kinards has the chicken pox. Mrs. Edna Helton is ill. BEASLEY Beasley Receives OEO Award At the regular December meet ing of the Laurens County Com munity Action, Inc. the Reverend O’Dell Beasley of Laurens was presented with the O.B.O. Rural Service Award. The presentation was made by J.T.W. Mims of Clinton, a mem ber of the Agency’s Executive Committee. Mr. Beasley was one of a small group of South Carolinians to re ceive this honor in recognition of his outstanding work with and assistance to the poor of Lau rens County. In the Southeastern Region, of which South Carolina is a part, this recognition is be ing made to honor volunteers and non-professional employees who have made a significant contri bution to the rural poor. Mr. Beasley is a native of Laurens County, the son of Mr. C. D. Beasley. He is a grad uate of Sanders High School in Laurens and attended Johnson C. Smith Theological Seminary in Charlotte, N.C. For the past five years he has contributed to the religious life of Laurens County, serving as pastor for the Laurens Church of God on King Street and the Wil kins Heights Church of God in Charlotte, N.C. The steel industry has au thorized the expenditure of more than $222 million for air andwa- ter pollution control this year and later. About $600 million was spent for pollution control equip ment from 1951 through 1967. BY WALLACE E. CRUMLIN The Ladies AlertClubofMount Moriah Baptist Church met re cently with Mrs. Pearl Rice. Christmas decorations a- dorned the home which gave all a spirit of Christmas. After the devotion, the presi dent, Mrs. Elnora Summerspre- sided over the business session. Each member shared his talent in song or reading, using “Christ mas* as a theme. The exchanging of Chnst- mas gifts served to reveal each member’s secret pal after the r year, 1968. A beautiful Christmas dinner was the climax of the social hour. The next meeting will be held with Mrs. Elsie Rice on Horne Street. EMANCIPATION PROGRAM The annual Emancipation Pro gram will be observed Wednes day evening, January 1 atSpring- field Baptist Church of Laurens. The program is being sponsored under the auspices of the Lau rens County Chapter of the NAACP. The Emancipation Pro clamation will be r^ad as part of the observance. The Reverend J. O. Rich, pastor of St. Paul Baptist Church of Anderson will be the guest speaker. There will be no door admission and the pub lic is invited to attend. QUARTERLY MEETING Mt. Zion and New Bethel A.M.E. Churches held their quar terly conferences, jointly on Sunday, December 22 at Mt. Zion Church of Joanna. The Revered W. S. Mims, presiding elder of the Greenwood District of the A.M.E. Church, delivered the morning sermon after which he presided on the quarterly con ference. The Reverend W. L. Hunter is pastor of the two con gregations. HOME FOR CHRISTMAS George Taylor, recently in ducted into service while teaching at Martha Dendy Elementary School, was home with his par ents and relatives. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Taylor, re side on Bond Street of Clinton. ROBINSON BURNSIDE LARRY BOBO Taylor, stationed at Ft. Jack- son in Columbia is expected to Leave for duties at Ft. Lee, Va., immediately after his return to Ft. Jackson in January. Pfc. Nathaniel Robinson, now stationed at Ft. Hood, Texas is spending the holidays with his wife and their daughter Be- aneatha. He will return to Ft. Hood this month. Willie L. Burnside is smil ing as usual while spending the holidays with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Burnside of N. Broad Street, Clinton. He has re cently completed three weeks of basic training at Ft. Jackson. His training is in the area of heavy artillery. Pfc. Larry Bobo is spending the holidays with his wife, Mrs. Rosa Lee Bobo and relatives. Having completed basic train ing at Ft. Gordon, Ga., Pvt. Bobo received special training as a light vehicle truck driver at Ft. Ord in Monray, Calif. He will leave January 6 for Ft. Dix, N.J. and later will be stationed in Germany. PTA TO MEET Mrs. Lois Y.
