Beat Afrtea (abb.) Public cemrm a nee (abb.) Prlattr'a ant BY SALLY SHAW DEAR SALLY: I’m very much concerned about my fiance’s al coholic tendencies. He’s consid erate enough when he’s with me to restrain himself along these lines, but he admits frankly that on some of the nights when we don’t have dates he drinks him self stupid with some of his pals. He is otherwise a very fine man, but these drinking jags of his bother me very much, and I keep wondering if his love for me after we’re married will keep him on the wagon. CONCERNED. DEAR CONCERNED: His love for you NOW isn’t keeping him balanced on the wagon, and cer tainly marriage in itself is nc cure for alcoholism. If he really does love you enough, he’ll try NOW to do something about his drinking. In any event, you’d best not make any wedding plans un til you have proof-positive that he’s off the sauce for good. Al coholism has wrecked too many marriages! DEAR SALLY: My brother, who considers himself quite a singer, has volunteered his services as vocalist at my forthcoming wed ding, and this has thrown my fi ancee and me into a dither. The truth of the matter is that my brother can’t carry a tune in a basket, and we’re afraid the sounds he’ll make will ruin the entire effect of our wedding. He’s the nicest guy in the world, though, and we both hesitate to do or say anything that might hurt his feelings. You can often camouflage them effectively this way: First scrape out the discolored spot with a knife. Then snip pile from a hidden section of the same rug, spread this pile in the palm of one hand, and dab glue over the top of it Then press the pile into the damaged spot. Later, when you brush up the pile, the repair will be practically un- noticeable. Q. What can I do when there seems to be an excess of fat in my homemade soup? A. Try stirring the surface of your soup gently with an ice cube wrapped in a clean cloth. The fat will congeal on the cold sur face of the cloth, and can be lifted out Q. How can I prevent rust on my garden tools and other small hand tools that are used outside the house? A. By coating them with a thin layer of paste wax. Q. How can I avoid tearing fine laces when washing them? A. By washing them in a bot tle of soapsuds, shaking them well inside this bottle. If they are to be starched, use a solution of sugar and water. To whiten lace, wash in sour milk. Q. How can I clean and re move spots from photographs, paintings, or prints? A. Add a few drops of ammonia to a cupful of warm water, dip a soft cloth into this, wring it al most dry, then go carefully over the surface of the picture. Q. How can I mix up a good metal polish? A. One very easily-made, but effective, metal polish consists of a half-cup of cigar ashes and one tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda mixed to a smooth paste with water. Q. How can I mend small holes in linoleum? A. You can do a nice repair job by filling these holes with a thick paste made by mixing fine ly-chopped cork with shellac. Af ter the repaired spot has hard ened thoroughly, sandpaper the surface smooth, then touch it up with matching paint Q. What can I do to renovate old furniture that is dirty and discolored? A. Try cleaning it with this solution: Equal quantities of vine gar, sweet oil, and turpentine, wen shaken together. Apply by rubbing it vigorously on the fur niture with a soft cloth. Q. How can I bring out the full flavor of raisins and dates? A. Try soaking ♦hem for about five minutes in ^oillnf water. Many other such tips on cook ery are included hold manual. in my house- Q. How can I remove finger marks from wallpaper? A. Dampen the fingermarked area with cold water, then dust on powdered pipe clay or fuller’s earth, and after a few minutes, brush off. ticklish situation? DEAR GROOM: It’s up to you to handle this with your brother. Tell him that the wedding ar rangements, including the music, are entirely in the hands of the bride and her parents -- but that the selection of your best man, a very important role, is in your hands . . .and you want “the nicest guy in the world* to stand up with you. DEAR SALI Y-One of the girls who rides to work with us every morning in our car pool often climbs into the car with her hair all done up in pin curlers, claim ing she was too pressed for time to comb her hair out at home. Then, when we arrive at work, she finished the job in the wash room. However, in the meantime, she is on public exhibit with all those unattractive gadgets on her head, and I think this is in very poor taste. Do you agree with me? TESS. DEAR TESS. I do indeed! If a girl absolutely MUST go some where in public with her hair done up this way, she should try her best to conceal it with a scarf of some kind. . . and even then, she can hardly be classi fied as “well-groomed.* DEAR SALLY: What would be a good way of surreptitiously learning the birthday of a cer tain lovely girl I’ve recently started dating? I have been in formed it's coming up in the near future, but I don’t want to ask her out-and-out, because I want to spring a special surprise on her when the day arrives. And I don’t want to question her family, for fear someone would let the cat out of the bag. A.C. DEAR A. C.: How about the horoscope ploy? Many newspa pers carry one of these features. Read aloud your own horoscope from one of these columns, play ing it for laughs. Then ask her birthday so you can do the same for her.
