Day Camp Opens; League Result s Given BY JOHN BINGHAM YMCA Director Girl’s Day Camp got under way Tuesday at the YMCA with 32 girls registered for the first period of camp. The camp is being jointly sponsored by the YMCA and the Clinton Camp Fire Girls. Only one week of camp will be offered this year. Jr. and Sr. Life Saving started Monday at the Lydia Pool at 11:00 a.m. and will continue each morn ing until 21 hours of instruction is reached. Also, instruction for ladies will be offered at the Clin ton Mills Pool 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday and Friday evenings for the next four weeks. SMALL FRY Games played in the Boys Small Fry Baseball League on Monday, July 8, show Joanna winning over the Southeast by a score of 3 to 2 and the Southwest over the Northwest 13 to 2. In Wednesday, July 10th, games the Northwest outscored Five Points 14 to 2 and the North west downed Joanna 5 to 2. Dr. Joe McGee of McGee’s Pharmacy, was the star pit cher of the Clinton High baseball team which won the State Championship for its class in 1945. That year he pitched 111 Innings, 12 full games, was winning pitcher In 13 games. Later he was catcher for the Clemson var sity team. Star hitters on that same Clinton High team were Ferd Jacobs Jr. and George Frady. : Pbxko Cbevrolat * 400 WEST MAIN « #**»♦****#♦*♦* In games played on Wednes day, July 10, the Northeast team defeated Five Points 9 to 3 and in the second game of the after noon Joanna downed the North west 16 to 1. The games which were sche duled for Friday July 12, were rained out in both the Small Fry and Little League Division. PONY LEAGUE only two of four games sche duled in the Pony League were played during the week. The games scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday were rairied out. In the Pony League games played Monday, July 8, the South ern team downed Lydia 11 to 3. In the second game played on Thursday the Northeast won over the Southern team 7 to 5. ADULT SOFTBALL The AdultSoftball League play ed only 2 of 4 games scheduled during the week. The games sche duled for Tuesday July 9, were rained out. The game played on Thursday evening July 11, show Joanna winning over Rock Ridge Presbyterians 1 to 0 in a very close and hard fought game. The only runnof the game was scored in the top of the first by Stock- man after he had doubled and came home on an error. Joanna scored their 1 run on 7 hits while Rock Ridge scored no runs on 9 hits. In the second game, the Jay- cees downed Lydia 13 to9. Powell led the Jaycees attack with three singled and 2 runs. Templeton led the Lydia hitters with 3 hits out of 4 times at bat. The Jaycees scored their 13 runs on 16 hits while Lydia scored their 9 runs on 12 hits. Clinton had an 11-6 record going into the final schedules game Wednesday night at Newberry. Greenwood had an 11-5 mark but had two games to play against Bailey 4 0 Ware Shoals. Clinton Centerfielder A.J.Cox and Rightfielder Al Webb were injured in an outfield collision in the first inningof Tuesday night’s game. They collided going after a fly ball and both were ad mitted to Self Memorial Hospital. Webb suffered a broken nose and Cox had head injuries. Clinton scored six runs in the last three innings to rally for the victory. Winning Pitcher Larry Sterling of Laurens aided his own cause with two hits. 17 Frosh Expected On PC Football Team Seventeen prospective fresh man football players have signed letters of intent to attend Pres byterian College. Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Gaily Gault this week announced the signing of eight backs, two ends, four tackles, a guard and two centers. The prospective freshmen are: BACKS - Jerry Chandler of Thornwell (165 pounds); Jim Duckworth (183 pounds), N. King ston, R. I.; Bill Duncan (165), Spartanburg; Wayne Hadaway (164), Atlanta, Ga.; Johnny Jack- son (140), Alpharetta, Ga.; John Jones (175), West Point, Ga., and Anderson; Tam Milton (162), De catur, Ga.; Bill Sloan (167) North Miami, Fla. ENDS - Sandy Cruickshanks (178), Gainesville, Fla.; Richard Kerr (161), Lancaster. Gault said that Hadaway has exceptional speed and has great potential. Gosnell will play in the North-South All-Star game in Columbia in August. Cruick shanks, a transfer from Gardner- Webb Junior College, andChand- ler are both kicking specialists. Larry Quinn of Evans, Ga., is the son of “Foots’ Quinn, a former football player at PC. Quinn holds the school record in the 100-yard dash at 10.5 seconds. The first week will be devoted to conditioning drills only. Con tact work will not begin until Aug. 19. School opens Aug. 22 so Howe has only three full days of two- a-day regular practices before the opening of school. The Red Devils open their sea son Sept. 6 at Georgetown. Tentative plans for the safety program were made Tuesday at a meeting ofthe Chamber of Com merce Board of Directors.
