Today is the birthday of Mrs. Brunson Asbill. Mr. and Mrs. Heath Copeland observe their wedding anniver sary June 16. Mrs. B. B. Ballard spent the weekend in Columbia with Pvt. Ballard as the guest of I t. and Mrs. Eugene Johnson. Lt. W. S. Horne of Edgewood Arsenal, Md., is spending the week with Mrs. Horne and little son, Billy. Cecil White, seaman second class, of Jacksonville, Ela. spent the weekend with hisparents, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. White. Mrs. Isabella Parker of Cam den, N J. was the guest last week of Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Ferguson. An appeal was issued yester day through the local Red Cross for 250 broom handles to be used in training by the 39 A.A.F. de tachment of PC. Brehmer Named Delegate To Switzerland Meeting Larry Brehmer son of Mr. and Mrs. Judson Brehmer, South Adair Street, was delegated by the First Baptist Church Sunday morning to serve as its repre sentative to the Baptist Youth World Conference to be held in Berne, Switzerland July 22 - 28th. He will join 30 other young people from the Carolinas in New York July 20th where they will fly Lufthansa German Air lines to Amsterdam and will go by rail to Berne. In Berne they will gather with 5,000 young peo ple from 60 or more nations. After the conference, the group will visit Rome, Florence, Ve nice, Paris and London, returning to New York August 10th. Larry is a rising sophmore at Clinton High School where he is a member of the junior varsity basketball team and track team. He is a member of the Order of the Arrow of the Blue Ridge Scout Council and Boy Scout Troop 111, where he received the rank of Eagle Scout at age 13, and has later been awarded the Bronze Palm the next distinc- LARRY BREHMER tion above Eagle Rank. Last year he joined the Philmont Scout Expedition at Cimarmn, New Mexico. He is a former carrier for the Greenville - News Piedmont. While serving as a carrier was the recipient of an annual scho larship award given by the News- Piedmont. LAW DEGREE—Olin Furr, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Olin F. Furr of Clinton, recently re ceived the Juris Doc tor degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law. He also recently was eleced to the Chi Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa, nation al honor fraternity. King, Long Graduate At Seminary Lucius Lamar King of Clinton and James Shannon Long of,Jo anna were among the 141 grad uates receiving diplomas May 31 from Southern Baptist Theo logical Seminary in Louisville, Ky. King is the son of Mrs. Lamar King of Clinton. He holds the bachelor of arts degree from Furman University. Long isthe son of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Long of Sims Street in Joanna and he holds the B.A. degree from Presbyterian College. Both King and Long received the master of divinity degree. * * * Miss Cox Honored COLUMBIA - Kay ran Cox of Clinton received recognition dur ing the annual Awards Day at Columbia College. Heaton, of Clinton was promoted to Spec. 4 at a U.S. Army Missle sight in Germany. He and his wife, the former Miss Sara Sellers, live in Rockenhousen, Germany. Mr. and Mrs. Mac Bedenbaugh plan to attend the “Class of 1938” reunion of Stoney Hill High School of Prosperity on Saturday, June 15, which will lie held at Warrens Restaurant in Prosperity. Clyde Holt spent last weekend in Columbia with Mr. and Mrs. Ray Holt. Last weekend, guests of Mrs. Delia Russell and Mr. and Mrs. W, A. Bedenbaugh were Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy W'allace and daugh ter, Barbara of Long Beach, Calif. Mr. and Mrs. Bedenbaugh were Friday overnight guests of Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Croft in Barnwell. She returned home with Mr. and Mrs. Danny Bouslay who also attended the exercises. Sgt. and Mrs. Tommy Jenkins of Myrtle Beach enjoyed a few days here last week with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Beaverdam-Warrior Survey Is Underway A field unit of the State Water shed Planning Party started mak ing engineering surveys on the 37,000 acre Beaverdam-Warrior Creek Watershed this week. Later on, other memt>ers of the conservation programs on the farms of the watershed, plus special treatment of silt source areas. Gullies, severely eroding fields, and roadsides, produce a high rate of rainfall run-off. planning party will make studies in the watershed. Finally, all of the information will be brought together in die form <f a water shed work plan. The local people will have a chance to approve or disapprove the plan when it is completed. It will take approximately six weeks to complete the plan, according to C. D. Spivey, in charge of the planning party. During an average year there are three or four floods that cost farmers along $e streams thousands of dollars, and also considerably damage to roads and bridges, according to Horace I . Martin, chairman of the direct r? f the Watershed Conservation I Tstrict. The watershed program will consist of three essential parts, but others may t>e added when fea sible and desired by local people. The first purpose is land treat ment. This consists of regular A second objective is the con trol or reductionof flooding. This is one of the major problems in the watershed. Several deten tion dams are planned to reduce flooding. Also, stream channel improvement to keep overflow at a minimum. A third objective is the storage of municipal water in one of the dams for the town of Gray Court. Mayor E. J. Evatt stated that they were thinking in terms of future use and would like to plan for about one and one-half million gallons of water per day. Under Public Law No. 566, Congress has authorized the gov ernment to pay construction cost for flood prevention, such as dams and stream channel Im provements as well as to fur nish free planning and engineer ing services. Local people are expected to secure easements, contract for work, and maintain the completed project.
