Anr HOW CAN I? s#**- ,e t, or BY COUNTY AGENTS, EXTENSION HOME ECONOMISTS WEED CONTROL - To control honeysuckle, spray with 2/3 oz. of 2-4-D per gallon of water or 1 pound broadcast per acre. LIFE-PRESERVER - The life- preserver way to store woolen gloves, scarves and cashmere sweaters for the summer is to put them into perfectly clean fruit jars, along with moth cry stals, then sealing the jars tight. SPIDER MITES-Spider mites are on a great many of our shrubs, roses, and trees. We suggest that you get sulphur and dust several times. They are more expensive compounds that can be used such as Cygm. THRIP CONTROL - A great deal of our cotton is infested with thrip, flea beetles, and spider mites. A lot of our stands will be lost unless they are sprayed or dusted with at least two appli cations. Let’s not wait but put on an application as soon as possible and repeat it in a week. STORING GRAIN - With the harvest season of small grain on hand, storage naturally follows. A good foundation and calking of all seams are a must for fumi gation to control small grain in sects. BY ANNE ASHLEY Q. How can I repair a tear in a rubber raincoat 0 A. Cut a patch out of rubber, roughen the under-surface of the patch and the area around the hole with sandpaper. Apply a thin coat of rubber cement to both surfaces and let dry. Then apply a second coat to the patch, press on, and smooth down. Q. What can I do when a bottle cap does not seal tightly because the cork or paper insert is miss ing 0 A. Wrap a piece of string about the neck of the bottle at the bottom of the screw-threads, and the cap will seat on the string to form a good seal. Q. How can I remove varnish stains from fabrics? A. By saturating with turpen tine or mineral spirits, rubbing between the hands, then spong ing with alcohol. Q. How can I deal with rust or copper stains or porcelain sur faces? A. Wash with household am monia and water, or a solution of three tablespoons Javelle water to one quart water. If this doesn’t achieve the effects you’re seeking, try scrubbing with a non-abrasive cleanser. Q. What is a good quick-drying tip for a fresh fingernail-polish job? A. Put your freshly-made-up hands, with fingers widespread, into the freezing compartment of your refrigerator. In just a few seconds your polish will set nicely. Q. How can I forestall the annoyance of having some of my decorative candles bend and droop? A. By giving them a coat or two of clear varnish or shellac before the hot weather sets in. Q. How can I remedy stick ing piano keys? A. Try raising the heat and low ering the humidity in the room for several days. Work the keys up and down and sideways. If the stickiness doesn’t disappear, best to call in a piano timer. Q. How can I test for the hardness or softness of water for laundering? A. By adding 1/4-teaspoon of powdered soap to a pint of warm water in a quart jar, and shaking this. If no suds form, or if the suds do not remain firm, your water is hard. Q. How can I prevent the bark surface on rustic furniture from peeling off? A. By giving it a coat or two of spar varnish. Many other such tips on the care of furniture are contained in my new household manual. Q. How can I remove grease stains from a carpet 0 A. Cover with French chalk, allow to dry, then take up with a vacuum cleaner. Repeat several times. Then clean with carbon tetrachloride. Q. How should colored silks be cleaned? A. These require much care when washing, and it’s best not to allow them to become too badly soiled before washing. Add a little salt to cold water to prevent the colors from running. FIRE BLIGHT - Fire blight is affecting pears, apples, and crab apples all across the Piedmont. The bacterial disease causes new growth to wilt, turn brown, and die. It often enters the plant through the blooms during the blooming season, according to the pathologist. The only effective control is in pruning, and now is the best time for this.
