And when she and I are together we usually mix a little “shop talk* withour conversations. Now as it happens, both her company and mine are bidding for a cer tain lucrative account, and I’m sure she is in a position to give me some helpful information that might aid me to land this account for my own company. Do you think it would be ethical for me to try to do this? SALESMAN SAM. DEAR SALESMAN SAM: The very fact that you asked indicates that you KNOW it would not be ethical: You would in effect be “using" this girl and betraying her confidence. DEAR SALLY: For several months I dated a fine young man who took me to some of the nicest places in town, was a very free spender, and also gave me every indication that he like me as much as I like him. Then, with out warning, he stopped phoning me for dates, and I’ve been very miserable ever since and miss him terribly. Now I’ve just been informed by a mutual friend that he stopped calling me because he suffered a financial reverse and now feels he can’t afford the cost of dates with me. It made me happy to learn that it wasn’t loss of interest in me that stopped his calls . . . and now I would like him to know that it’s HIM I like, and that he doesn’t have to spend a lot of money on me, that I would be just as happy sitting at home with him in front of the television as dining and dancing in the town’s most expensive club. How can I get this information to him° SHELVED. DEAR SHELVED: Easy. Write to him, or phone him -- telling him what you have told me. DEAR SALLY: Are there any occasions at all when you can properly scold or reprimand someone else’s children? For personal reasons, I’d appreciate your comments on this. LONG- SUFFERING. DEAR LONG-SUFFERING: It’s all right to admonish another per son’s child about doing something dangerous or destructive when one of his parents isn’t around, but normally the only persons who have a right to discipline a child are his parents, his teachers, or a baby-sitter. Other people’s children are their re sponsibilities, not yours, and you have no right to step in. DEAR SALLY: I’m a woman of 43, with two teen-aged children. My husband and I have been dis cussing the idea of another baby. We both would dearly love a new little member in our family, but are wondering whether we’re too old for this . .. whether “old sters' like us with a new baby would provide a source of amuse ment among our friends and possible embarrassment for our teenagers. ARIZONA. DEAR ARIZONA: How silly can you be! If you and your husband want that baby, by all means have it. Certainly you’re not too old, and certainly there’s nothing “amusing." “embarrassing," or unusual about the age-gap be tween your teenagers and a new little baby. NOTE TO BETTY: It is tra ditional and expected that all the attendants at a wedding receive some sort of gifts as memen toes of the occasion. These gifts need not be expensive at all . . . just within the limits of what the bride and groom can afford.
