FARMS and FOLKS A tijtht labor situation is likely to continue on South Carolina farms, says P. S. Williamon, Clem son Extension farm man agement specialist. *We can expect workers to con- tinue to shift to nonfarm employ ment because of higher wages and improved working and living conditions. “It also appears that wages for farm workers will continue to rise, varying according to the ex tent of losses of farm workers to industry," predicts the specia list. Farmers, as a result, will have to cut corners if they intend to maintain high levels of pro duction. Williamon says this can be done: “Planning your work ahead will be one of the keys to adjusting to fewer workers." Williamon says good advanced planning may allow you to ex change labor with neighbors dur ing peak labor periods, such as harvesting. You will also need to make plans well in advance if your’re going to contract some of the Jobs instead of doing them yourself. The same is true when adding more labor-saving machinery and equipment. You’ll need time for installing and familiarizing yourself with the machines, then adjusting them. “It’s also a good idea to keep your eyes open for potential year- round workers. Most of the time they’ll need training--something you'll need to do before the peak work periods. A 1967 South Carolina cotton project is mentioned in the April issue of Agricultural Marketing, published by the Consumer and Marketing Service of the United States Department of Agri culture. “Helping cotton producers and ginners improve the quality of cotton and providing buyers and : cotton mill personnel with better : information are aims of a pro- Ject sponsored by South Carolina and the Matching Fund Program - of USDA’s Marketing Service, says the article. It refers to the weekly qua lity reports issued last year by Clemson University and several cooperating agencies. The reports listed on a county and regional basis the lint quality * factors of strength, length, and . length uniformity — information highly useful to the cotton trade but not previously given in re- . ports. The Palmetto state - USDA * program was part of an in<tastry- wide effort to relate the state’s cotton production more directly .to trade demand.
