C., Thursday, October 2d, 1967 Chronicle SPORTS After Bombing Hiflcrest 46-0 Devils Host Newberry , Clinton High School’s Red Devils host dewberry Friday night and will be shooting for their sixth win of the season. Clinton is 5-2-1 after rolling over Hillcrest 46-0 in a class 'A\ mismatch last week. •* Newberry will bring a 3-5 record into Clinton after being drubbed 53-0 by Woodruff last week. Clinton Coach Claude Ho^e describes Newberry as a com paratively young team, fea turing juniors. He says the Bulldogs’ offense is about equally divided between run- , ning and passing plays. Coming down the season’s homestretch, all of Clinton’s remaining three games are at home. After the Newberry game, Clinton will host Lap- rens and then Woodruff. Last Friday, Clinton used only 10 plays to score three touchdowns in romping past winless Hillcrest. Gary Campbell scored the first one on a six-yard run to cap a 35-yard drive after a short Hillcrest punt. Also in the first quarter, Andy Young bucked over from the one. Jphnny Jacks set it UP with a 31-yard run as Clinton moved 50 yards in three plays. Bill Freeman kicked the second of his two extra points. Clinton scored three times in the sepond quarter. Camp bell raced 15 yards for the first Jacks scored from the one and Steve Grady scored from the two. Jacks’ touch down was set up when tackle A1 Webb recovered a Hillcrest fumble at the 27. Campbell returned an intercepted pass 40 yards to the six to set up Grady’s score. Grady scored his second touchdown on a two - yard burst in the third quarter and Jacks plunged over from the one for his third score. Jack Thibodeau kicked both extra points to round out the scor ing. Coach Howe emptied his bench ih the fourth quarter and all members of the team got into the game. Jm Si 4. The Clinton squad last week rolled over Laurens 33-0 fojr its sixth straight win of the season. Clinton defeated the Woodruff JV’s in an earlier meeting, 34-0. Today, Rhodes will settle for a victory. The Junior High team plavs at Woodruff in the ? rst game of a football doub’eheader. The Junior High teams square off at 6 p.m. and the junior varsities of the two schools play at the conclusion of the first game. Clinton Junior High previ ously beat Woodruff 6-0 in a squeeker two days before Ccach Rhodes’ first child, a daughter, was born. Last Thursday, the team gave Coach Rhodes a silver cup with his daughter’s initials .engraved on it. The teem also gave Rhodes a 12-0 w n over Thornwell. It was Clinton’s fifth win in six parres. The only loss was a 14-12 decision to Union in the opening game. In a previous meeting, Clinton topped the Thornwell JVs 7-6. Last Thursday, Clinton scored on the first play from scrimmage in the second straight game. Doug Ward passed to Billy Young for a 55-yard scoring play. A week previously. Ward ran 30 yards on the first play from scrim mage. Clinton threatened several other times during the game hut could muster only one more score. David Mangum set up a third quarter score with a 45-yard run to the three-yard-line. Ward scored it. Clinton threatened in the first quarter after Sandy Saunders recovered a fumble and Ward passed 40 yards to Scott Hammet at the one-foot line. A Clinton fumble stopped that threat. In the second quarter, Mangum and Mike Cunningham got off good runs to put Clinton at the one-yard-line but Thorn well threw back the threat with a goal-line stand. Pacing Thornwell’s defen sive efforts were Bobby Ashe, Jim Singleton and Kanada Roach. Jerry Kemp and ,L arr y Weaver led Thomwell’s of fense. Clinton’s defense was led by rover back David Mangum, middle guard Mike Simmons and end Billy Young. Full back Lawrence Jones was cited for his performance in blocking. Thornwell Plays Tonight At Greenwood With a 3-4-1 record, Thornwell tries to get to the .500 mark tonight in a game against the Greenwood Junior Varsity at Greenwood. Kickoff time has been set at 7:30. Thornwell dropped a 31-0 decision Friday night at Ninety Six. A blocked punt, a bad snap from center on a punt and an intercepted pass plagued Thornwell in the game at Ninety Six. Arthur Belcher blocked a Thornwell punt on the third play of the game. Joe Ste wart* picked up the bounding ball and raced 30 yards to a touchdown. Also in the first quarter, Bobby Fisher scored for Ninety Six on a six-yard run. In.the second quarter, a had snap from center on a punt gave the Panthers pos- ■ session at the Thornwell one and Bupba Aiton punched it over. In the third quarter, Lonnie Speech intercepted a Thorn well pass at the Thornwell 35. Goss scored on a 40-yard run in the third quarter and White ran the extra point after a bad snap from center on the kick attempt. Clinton Coach Preston Cox was pleased with the block ing of the offensive unit and was particularly impressed with the efforts of pulling guard Otis Patterson, center Mike Crawford and tack'es Haskel Patterson and John Farmer.
