After Bombing Hiflcrest 46-0
Devils Host Newberry
, Clinton High School’s Red
Devils host dewberry Friday
night and will be shooting for
their sixth win of the season.
Clinton is 5-2-1 after rolling
over Hillcrest 46-0 in a class
'A\ mismatch last week.
•* Newberry will bring a 3-5
record into Clinton after being
drubbed 53-0 by Woodruff last
week.
Clinton Coach Claude Ho^e
describes Newberry as a com
paratively young team, fea
turing juniors. He says the
Bulldogs’ offense is about
equally divided between run-
, ning and passing plays.
Coming down the season’s
homestretch, all of Clinton’s
remaining three games are at
home. After the Newberry
game, Clinton will host Lap-
rens and then Woodruff.
Last Friday, Clinton used
only 10 plays to score three
touchdowns in romping past
winless Hillcrest.
Gary Campbell scored the
first one on a six-yard run to
cap a 35-yard drive after a
short Hillcrest punt. Also in
the first quarter, Andy Young
bucked over from the one.
Jphnny Jacks set it UP with a
31-yard run as Clinton moved
50 yards in three plays. Bill
Freeman kicked the second of
his two extra points.
Clinton scored three times
in the sepond quarter. Camp
bell raced 15 yards for the
first Jacks scored from the
one and Steve Grady scored
from the two. Jacks’ touch
down was set up when tackle
A1 Webb recovered a Hillcrest
fumble at the 27. Campbell
returned an intercepted pass
40 yards to the six to set up
Grady’s score.
Grady scored his second
touchdown on a two - yard
burst in the third quarter and
Jacks plunged over from the
one for his third score. Jack
Thibodeau kicked both extra
points to round out the scor
ing.
Coach Howe emptied his
bench ih the fourth quarter
and all members of the team

Junior High
Gives Coach
Two Gifts
The Clinton Junior High
School football team gave
Coach Bill Rhodes two gifts
last Thursday—a victory and
a silver cup.
Today, Rhodes will settle
for a victory. The Junior
High team plavs at Woodruff
in the ? rst game of a football
doub’eheader. The Junior
High teams square off at 6
p.m. and the junior varsities
of the two schools play at the
conclusion of the first game.
Clinton Junior High previ
ously beat Woodruff 6-0 in a
squeeker two days before
Ccach Rhodes’ first child, a
daughter, was born. Last
Thursday, the team gave
Coach Rhodes a silver cup
with his daughter’s initials
.engraved on it.
The teem also gave Rhodes
a 12-0 w n over Thornwell. It
was Clinton’s fifth win in six
parres. The only loss was a
14-12 decision to Union in the
opening game. In a previous
meeting, Clinton topped the
Thornwell JVs 7-6.
Last Thursday, Clinton
scored on the first play from
scrimmage in the second
straight game. Doug Ward
passed to Billy Young for a
55-yard scoring play. A week
previously. Ward ran 30 yards
on the first play from scrim
mage.
Clinton threatened several
other times during the game
hut could muster only one
more score. David Mangum
set up a third quarter score
with a 45-yard run to the
three-yard-line. Ward scored
it.
Clinton threatened in the
first quarter after Sandy
Saunders recovered a fumble
and Ward passed 40 yards to
Scott Hammet at the one-foot
line. A Clinton fumble
stopped that threat. In the
second quarter, Mangum and
Mike Cunningham got off
good runs to put Clinton at
the one-yard-line but Thorn
well threw back the threat
with a goal-line stand.
Pacing Thornwell’s defen
sive efforts were Bobby Ashe,
Jim Singleton and Kanada
Roach.
Jerry Kemp and ,L arr y
Weaver led Thomwell’s of
fense.
Clinton’s defense was led by
rover back David Mangum,
middle guard Mike Simmons
and end Billy Young. Full
back Lawrence Jones was
cited for his performance in
blocking.

At Greenwood
With a 3-4-1 record,
Thornwell tries to get to
the .500 mark tonight in a
game against the Greenwood
Junior Varsity at Greenwood.
Kickoff time has been set
at 7:30.
Thornwell dropped a 31-0
decision Friday night at
Ninety Six.
A blocked punt, a bad snap
from center on a punt and
an intercepted pass plagued
Thornwell in the game at
Ninety Six.
Arthur Belcher blocked a
Thornwell punt on the third
play of the game. Joe Ste
wart* picked up the bounding
ball and raced 30 yards to a
touchdown. Also in the first
quarter, Bobby Fisher scored
for Ninety Six on a six-yard
run.
In.the second quarter, a
had snap from center on a
punt gave the Panthers pos-
■ session at the Thornwell one
and Bupba Aiton punched it
over.
In the third quarter, Lonnie
Speech intercepted a Thorn
well pass at the Thornwell
35. He hit Joe Stewart with
a touchdown pass to cap
