Rice, 64. of Rt. 1, Clinton, died Tuesday at 12:20 p. m. at a Greenwood hospital after an illness of one. week. A native of Buncombe County, N. C., sbn of the late KnWrson and Hattie Barnes Hire, he lived near Clinton r )0 years and was a member of l.ydia Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Heliah Floyd Rice; a daughter. Mrs. Marvin (Mild red) Barbee of Clinton; a son, Ixister Rice of Hampton; a stepdaughter, Mr- Clarence (Mary) Blackwell of Clinton; a sister, Mrs. Eva Hanvey of Clinton; two brothers, I,aw- rence Rice of Clinton and Ish- rnael Rice of Newberry; 13 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Gray Funer al Home. The body is at the funeral home and the family is at the home of a sister, Mrs. Hanvey, Rt. 1, Clinton. James P. Moon Funeral and committal ser vices for James P. Moon were Conducted Thursday at Newberry. Mr. Moon, who was well known in Clinton, died Mon day, Dec. 5, after several years of declining health and an illness of several days. He was a native of Atlanta, Ga., but had lived in Newber- ry for 43 years. Eudcation Asso. Holds Banquet On Thursday, December 8, at 7:30 p m. the Laurels Coun ty Education Association held its annual Christmas Banquet in the Presbyterian College Dining-Hall. The evening was enjoyed by, approximately three hundred members of the association and their guests. A delicious banquet was prepared and served by the P. C. Dining Hall Director, Mrs. Mildred Bowers, and her staff. Mr. J. Eugene Stockman of th« Cross Hill - Mountville School, President of the Asso ciation. presided, welcomed the guests, and introduced the program for thC evening. Special guests were: Sena tor and Mrs. W. C. Dobbins, Representative and Mrs. Paul Culbertson, Representative and Mrs. David Taylor (Rep. Taylor had to attend a meet ing to which he was previous ly committeed),, and Dr, and Mrs. Raymond Thigpen from the State Department of Edu cation in Columbia. The program for the even ing was arranged by Miss Eu genia Burns. President-Elect of the Association. Dr. Ray mond Thigpen, wh 0 is the State Supervisor of Education and his wife presented a beau tiful program of Christmas music. The range of numbers went from the lovely, deeply religious theme, to the folk songs for Christmas, to the lighter, popular songs for Christmas. Wreck Resuff Of Mischance or * Accident, Jury Says A coroner’s jury ruled Thursday that the ?D9C. 4 death of Ray A. Murphy, 21- year-old Rt. 2. Clinton Ne gro. was due ?‘to mischance or Occident.” The victim, a paratrooper stationed at Ft. Bragg. N. C., died of head injurils in a one- car crash on S. C. Highway 66 about two mi^cs north of Joanna. Deputy • Sheriff Harmon Murrah Jr. testified at the in quest he was noticed of the wreck by a passing motorist. He sa : d he met a Negro. Clarence 'Flanders, walking in the middle of the road, while heading for the wreck. He said Flanders told him he was the driver of the wrecked car. At the site of the crash. Murrah said he found Mur phy pinned in th.e vehicle and St‘11 breathing. After Murphy was freed, Murrah said he took both men to the emergency room of the Clinton hospital but that Murphy was dead on arrival. State Highway Patrolman C. W. Harr son testified there were no skid marks at t h e scene of the wreck and that he estimated the speed of the vehicle at 45-53 mil^s per hour, with'n th-> po.-t.d sp a ed limit at that point. as Scuj* Oxolm* y j j % Rhodes on All-State Team Thirty-three of the tofc) high school athletes in the state have been awarded berths on WBTV’s 1966 South Carolina All-State foobtball team, as selected by a 20-man board of coaches in conjunc tion with Channel 3. On the “dream team" is guard Thomas Rhodes of Clinton High School. Rhodes, a rugged 180- pounder was a member of the South Carolina Shrne Bowl squad, and was named on other all- state teams. The WBTV squad consits of three full teams —12 backs, six ends, six tackles, six guards and three centers. Of the players selected most appeared in the Shrine Bowl game. stains from pie dishes? A. Try this: Place the glass ware in a vessel of slightly salted water, letting it come to a boil slowly, then boil thoroughly, and follow by cooling slowly.
