THE CLINTON CHRONICLE -V Highlights From Clinton High By KAYRAN COX Jaycee-PC Stocking Fund Secures $925 Sunday afternoon the Jay- cee - PC Christmas Stocking drive was conducted to raise funds for local underprivileged children. The city was can vassed between 1 and 3 p.m. by 168 students from Presby terian College. The goal was set at $750, and the students collected $925. Ten groups, consisting of Al pha Sigma Phi, Theta Chi. Kappa Alpha, Sigma Nu, Pi Kappa Phi, Pi Kappa Alpha, and two independent groups called Monk’s Merry Men, and Charlie’s Changers plus the co-eds made the solicitation. A plaque was presented to the WE'RE COMiMG^ TO WORK FOR. "JIM” GOODMAN j 4# group having the highest per centage of members present. The Clinton Jaycees will use the donations to take area un derprivileged children shopping to buy necessities and also to give a Christmas party for these children on Tuesday Dec. 13. Jaycee chairman Len Cari- cofe expressed appreciation to the students for their work and also to the residents of Clinton for their help. By KAY RAN COX CHS is quite proud of James Meadows, who has been chosen to participate in the 1967 All-State Chorus. James sang in Columbia last year and was again selected this year on the basis of tone, voice control, breath control, and pronuneis tion. So. let’s all offer James our best wish es on February 17 as he sings tenor in this year’s chorus. * * * Clinton High School seems to house many fine people, for it was represented in the Shrine Bowl by Tommy Rhodes and the CHS band. Tommy played a great game Saturday as lineman, and our band really did a fine job, too. All of us should congratulate them both. ' r * * Next Tuesday night. Dec. 13. the Junior Class of Clinton High School will present “Mama’s \ Baby Boy.” This year’s cast deludes Becky Crisp. Rita Johnson. Cookie Arnold. Sharon Plaxico, Sid ney Pitts, Libby Bishop. Jack Ferguson. Jane Timmerman, Buddy -Cox, Valerie Simmons. Danny Hellams, and Sara Lynn Wysor. The three-aet comedy will be presented at eight o’cloclc inf the high school auditorium and is un der the direction of Miss Eloise Miller and Mrs. Rita Rhame. The admission fees have been set at fifty cents and seventy-five cents. Good luck, juniors, we’ll all be there to see you in “Mama’s Baby Boy”! * * • Last Monday in chapel the National Honor Society spon sored an extremely interest ing and beneficial program. It was called Operation “Get Smart.” Through the Depart ment of Corrections in Co lumbia we arranged to hear three convicts who visit high schools to tell young people the mistakes they have made in their lives. The speakers, known to us as I, II, and III, related to us their true life stories and warned us to walk the "straight and narrow way.” I thought this was cer tainly the most impressive chapel program CHS has ever been host to, and sin cerely wish everyane couiu have had the opportunity of bjing there. Many of us CHS- ’ers learned quite a lesson from these young men. Maj. Gen. Duncan To Speak at College Maj. Gen. George T. Dun can. deputy commanding gen eral, Third United States Army, Fort McPherson, Ga.; will speak to the' Presbyte rian College student body Fri day morning. The program, scheduled to start at 10:00 a. m. in Belk Auditorium, will feature the presentation of an “outstand ing civilian service award” to President Marc C. Weersing for his support of and contri bution to the ROTC at Pres byterian. At the same time, Gen. Duncan will present to Col. (Ret.) A. J. Thackston, PC dean of students, a “certifi cate of appreciation for patri otic civilian service” in sup port of the ROTC. A native of Thomasville, Ga., George T. Duncan enter ed the Army upon graduation from the U, S. Military Acad emy in 1932. He served with the 65th Infantry Division in Europe during World War II and commanded a regiment of the 40th division in Korea. He was promoted to brigadier general in 1956 and assigned as commanding general of the Berlin Command. With promotion to major general in 1961 came the command of the IV U. S. Army Corps with headquarters in Birmingham, Ala. Then after service jyith the Continental Army Com mand at Fort Monroe, Va., Gen. Duncan last April as sumed his present assign ment. An active Presbyterian, George Duncan became a member of th e PC board of visitors this fall. His decora tions include the Distinguish ed Service Medal. Ray Albert Murphy died Sunday morning from in juries received in an automo bile accident near Joanna. He was stationed at. Fort Bragg, N. C., a member of Co. B3, 325th Infantry Paratroop ers. A graduate of Clinton’s Bell Street High School, he also attended Lincoln -Technical School in Newark, N, J., where he studied auto mech anics. Surviving are his parents, Willie Murphy and Mrs. An nie Bell Wiley Murphy, of Clinton; three brothers, Willie, Jr., and Fred Murphy of Jer sey City, N. J., and David Murphy of Clinton; three sis ters, Mrs. Henrietta Davis of Clinton, Mrs. Josephine Sam uel and Mrs. Annie Bell Moses of Jersey City, N. J. Funeral services were con ducted Wednesday at St. Mat- them AME Church near Car lisle, with full military hon ors, the rites being led by a U. S. Army chaplain from Fort Gordon, Ga.
