There is another precaution we should take while driving in town. Be particularly careful of our children riding their bicycles, running from behnid cars, and balls rolling into the street. June is dairy month — and It is well to point out that the pro duction of milk is a science that the average consumer takes for granted. Behind the bottles of clean sweet milk in the refriger ator la an amaxing story of gene tics, nutrition, medicine, econ omy and other fields. Very few, not closely associat ed with the industry, know how necessary it is for a cow to have a balanced diet, that she be fed only in accordance with her in dividual need, the care that is so vital during both her producing and dry periods. ° Who but the dairyman can even imagine the multitude of amall details that must be carefully watched and the reams of records that must be kept. The health department is strict er about sanitary measures in the production of milk than in any other food we consume. Milk without a balanced diet is not a miracle food, but with or without a balanced diet it is a wonder food. It is compatable to all ages from infancy on and, ac cording to the youngsters at Thornwell, eVen the gods have no nectar to compare with a tall cold glass of good rich milk on any occasion. ABERCROMBIE Shown above Is Calner Lieu Dictator Nell, 0-year-old Hol stein cow that is the top cow in production in this area. Nell produced 21,040 pounds of milk and 058 pounds of batter fat. The previous lactation, Nell prodneed 21,750 pounds of milk and 789 pounds of batter fat. Nell is classified excellent and belongs to Jack Greer of White Plains. Herman Gabbert is manager of the farm and stated the herd average was 14,103 pounds of milk with an average bat ter fat of 528 pounds. The dairy herd consists of 112 milking cows. Thomwdl’s Dairy Milk For Children and Staff Morning begins early at Thorn- well’s Lush Acres Dairy, in Clin ton, when the 52 registered Guernseys are brought into the barn at 4:90 for milking. A part of Thornwell's child training program, the milking and processing is down by two milk commercially. The children and large staff have ac cess to unlimited quantities dur ing each meal and milk is deliv ered to the 20 homes on the cam pus every afternoon to that “milk breaks" can be enjoyed at random. A balanced diet ond all groups of five boys each, who the good rtc h milk they can drink alternate each morning, and who makes for rooy cheeks and bet- are under the supervision of Rob- ter *han average health for the ert Wickham and his assistant, children at Thornwell. Charles NalVy Clean i.iess and etllciency are the by-words in this operation and the cows and the boys usual ly cooperate with one another. One young man gives each cow a foot washing and keeps the bam clean while the milking is in process. Work moves along rapidly as the udders are washed and the milking machines attached. Each cow gets a share of individ ual attention and her particular habits or eccentricities are re spected or indulged by the boys who milk. Harmony is essentia 1 for good production. As the pails are filled they are taken to the processing room where the milk is poured into the bulk tank to await pasteurizing and/or homogenizing. The milk is then put into cans and deliv ered to the three kitchens on the campus. Thornwell does not market The most popular phase of the work in the dairy department is the making of ice cream.
