Program activities will be fo cused in seven areas: Medical profession, nursing profession, health departments, hospitals, schools, TB patients and their families and the general public. Tinkler and Mrs. Madge Hardy, both of Greenwood. . i A grant of $150 was made to the research project being con ducted by Dr. William A Cooke at the South Carolina Medical College. The sum of $25 was allocated ot the South Carolina League for Nursing to be used in the com pilation and distribution of a brochure encouraging youth to enter nursing to offset the pres ent shortage of nurses. G. N. Foy of Joanna was nom inated for re-election to a three- year term as representative di rector to the South Carolina Tu berculosis Association. He was also appointed as historian to record the current history of the bi-county group. Past histories of both associations are being written by a committee com posed of Mrs.' R. H. Roper, Jr., J. O’DELL Work Unit SHIRLEY ANN TIMMONS Wins Scholarship To Columbia Ctrtlege Shirley Ann Timmons has been awarded a $200 scholarship to Columbia College in Columbia. The daughter of Mrs. S. A. Tim mons, she has earned numerous honors at C.H.S. She has been active in the FJf,A. and the Student Council, and has parti cipated in two class plays. This year she is serving as co-editor of the Clintonian and Secretary of the Student Council. She was voted Miss C.H.S., D.A.R. Good Citizen, and Student of the Month. In her spare time Shirley Ann enjoys horseback riding, water skiing, and danc ing. Rimer is building two stock watering ponds on his cat- tie and Arabian horse farm eight miles northeast of Clinton on the Yarboroughs’ Mill Road. The lo cal Soil Conservation Service de signed and layed out the ponds this week. Mr. Rimer is build ing the ponds according to Lau rens Soil Conservation District recommendations and will re ceive ACP cost sharing assist ance in the construction. Leon ard Crotts, farm manager, said that sites have been picked out for three more farm ponds on the Rimer farm for building later on. • • » Recent coastal bermuda plant ings by the Laurens District planting service include 10 acres on the farm of Joe Holiday near Barksdale, and five seres for J. L. Griffin of Greenville on his farm near the Big Knob Fire Tower, and five acres for J. M. Oeland on the Old Ware Shoals Dairy farm. J. L. Adams, man ager of the farm, said that ap proximately 20 acres more of this perennial erosion control and hay and grazing crop will be planted after the next rain. • • • Mrs. Morris Hughes of Black- vilfe has requested-* assistance from the Laurens Soil Conserva tion District in carrying out tim ber stand improvement work on 35 acres of woodland on her 110 acre tree farm on Lake Green wood. Joel Canada, Forester, S. C. Commission of Forestry, rec ommended the practice to Mrs. Hughes and will give the neces sary technical assistance in ap proving the practice for ACP Cost sharing payments. Mrs. Hughes has been a cooperator with the Laurens Soil Conserva tion District since 1955 when the district’s tree planting service helped her plant the open land, 35 acres, to loblolly pines. Now Mrt. Hughes wants to kill out the worthless scrub hardwood trees and plant loblolly pines In their place. According to the conserva tion needs inventory report for Laurens County, there are some 75,000 acres of woodland in the county that need this treatment. • * * .
