Y A drive southward through Carolina’s storied Low Country, with its wonderful old planta tion houses, gardens, and moss- hung water oaks, wafts one gently through the pages of his tory. But, if your termination point on this Palmetto Pathway is Hilton Head Island, you’ll be pleasantly awakened from your dream of the past and will find yourself smack in the middle of what’s best in the contemporary present. For here the keynote is “prog ress. with a capital P.” The boot-shaped. 30,000-acre barrier island is booming with new inns, vacation houses, golf courses and shopping plazas. No one need worry, however, that the great natural beauty of Hilton Head will be bulldozed under by this development. The resident corporations have very carefully laid out their building and*"development plans in a manner calculated to preserve the great pines and ipagnolias, the slate-smooth beaches, and the bedazzling array of birds and wildlife. * Heading north to South on Hilton Hoad Island, you will see crews Working on the new Port Royal golf course—a champion ship 18-hole layout designed by George Cobb of Greenville. To go along with the course, a modern motor inn, the Port Royal House, will be built. Home sites will bo located along the fairways, as well as along Port Royal Sound and the ocean. According to officials of the Port Ray at Development Co., nine holes of the golf course will be open for play this fall. Driving farther south through the island’s picturesque small farms—most of them grazing small marsh tacky horses— you will pass the new Forest Beach shopping plaza. A barber shop, beauty - parlor, ‘ laundro mat, decorator’s studio and su permarket now serve both the island’s year-round residents and the visitor population. , Opening April 12 will be the new 45-room Adventure Inn, on the ocean just north of the WU ham Hilton Inn. The half-^il- lion-dollar resort facility will feature a combination of rustic and colonial designs, blending it into its lush sub-tropical setting of sabal palm and pine. In addition to a large dining room, the Adventure will have a coffee shop, convention room, two lounges and a free-form pool overlooking the ocean. Just down the way from the new Adventure Inn is the hand some redwood-and-brick William Hilton Inn. which is also under going an expansion. The Wil liam Hilton, an 80-room motor inn, is adding an oyster bar, lounge areas and an indoor rec reation area to its already pop ular resort facilities. Those who travel with chil dren after school Is out will be delighted to know that both the William Hilton and the Adven ture Inn have complete youth activities, including special chil dren’s dining programs. Teen agers are also looked after here, with a dance pavilion being con structed under the palms espec- tally for them. y A new gift store, “Thy Island Shop,” has just opened at the William Hilton Inn and features charming toys, various nick- nacks and gifts from all over the world. A resort-wear shop is now under construction there Touring farther south along Hilton Head's magnolia - lined roads, the visitor will see huge draglines and bulldozers mov ing vast amounts of earth in Sea Pines Plantation, carrying out the developer’s master plan A new airstrip, a second 18-hole golf course, new creek-front homesitesT’Seai Pines is a hive of activity, rapidly becoming the finest vacation and retire ment community on the Atlantic seaboard. And, as we said before, all this building and moving won’t hurt the great natural beauty of the island.
