Blalock of Clinton, has been named a member of the Order of Gownsmen for the sec ond semester at the University of the South, Sewanee, Tenn. This unique student order was founded in 1863 when a group of upperclassmen accepted respon sibility fro mainUining student traditions including the Honor Code and petitioned the faculty to mark absent from class any of their members who failed to ap pear in a black academic gown. The custom has persisted and today Sewanee’s Order of Gowns men constitutes the governing members of the student body. They wear black gowns to all classes and on all academic oc casions. Membership in the order is an nounced each semester, as a gownsman must maintain an ac ademic average of at least 2.00 and 2.25 for seniors and Juniors, respectively, and 3.00 for sopho mores. r ^ J. A. Black Services Held On Tuesday Funeral services for Joseph A. Black, 75, who died Saturday, were conducted Tuesday at 4:00 p. m. at the Lydia Mills Presby terian Church by Rev. Harry Frazier and Rev. J. B. Aber crombie. Burial was in Rosemont cemetery. Pallbearers were J. B. Tem pleton, Horace Smith, J. B. Neal, James Von Hollen, Charles Cobb and J. A. Galloway. He was a native of York Coun ty, a son of the late Rusell Banks Black and Mattie Good Black, and had lived in Laurens County for 30 years. He lived and worked at Lydia Mills a number of years and had lived on Rt. 2, Clinton, for the last 11 years. He was a member of the Lydia Mills Presbyterian Church where he was an elder and treasurer, and he was a Ma son. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. LillieJ&ae Wpids Black; two sons, J. A. Lydia Baptist Has Page As Evangelist Wiliam Page, Jr., is the evan gelist currently conducting a si- multaenous revival at Lydia Bap tist Church. The series will end on April 7 with 7:30 services each evening. The nursery opens at 7:15 each evening. Lydia Baptist is at the corner of Poplar and Palmetto Streets. Rev. Milton Sanders is pastor of the church. > Joanna PTA Gives Helping Hand To School, Children With two more meetings sched uled for the 1962-83 PTA year, the members of the Joanna Elemen tary School Parent-Teacher As sociation can feel that this has been the outstanding year of their 12-year-old organization. t There are approximately one hundred active members and the 6?ganization is affiliated with state and national units of the Parent-Teacher Association. Recently completed projects this year include three hundred and forty-six feet of chain link storm fence enclosing a play area for the smaller students adjacent to Milton Road, an at tractive walk gate connecting the series of steps to the gym nasium and the paved walk adja cent to the highway, shrubbery for the grounds, new paved walks across the front of the building, playground equipment, balls, bats, etc., eroded depres sions filled with topsoil, and a general clean-up program. are: J. The money-making committee is chairmaned by Louie Nabors, and the principal project which fiannced the latest improvements was the sale of birthday calen dars which brought in funds amounting to more than $1,200- 00. improvements and additions to the school porperties over the past several years have included new window draperies and a stage curtain for the auditorium; new curtains in the cafeteria; and playground equipment. The group carries on a continuous program of activities devoted to education, welfare, and protec tion ofthe c hildren of Joanna. Also, $700.00 will be spent on new books for the school’s libra ry between now and commepce- ment in May.
