A “hard pan” is a two or three inch crust that has formed about four inches under the surface of the soil. For the past ten to fifteen years, far mers have used disk plows that the soil three to four inches deep, have a tendency to only break These plows break the soil large ly by the weight of the machine. During this period of time, tractors were used to spread lime, to sidedress small grin, to crops. With 11 this traffic over pull combine, and to cultivate the fields and the use of only disk plows this “hard pan” has formed. Plant roots will not pene trate through this “hard pan” layer. In addition, weed seed are left in the top layer of soil and jeuts the yield of small grain and other corps. Dry weather takes a far graeter toll as a result of plants not being able to go down to moisture. I don’t believe a subsoil will remedy the problem. Even though the subsoil is fine tool and should be used more. It has a tendency to break the soil in such a that it saets hack down, with heavy ' rains and traffic, to its almost original po sition. However, the soil will ab sorb more water, following the Subsoil. It seems to me that the bottom plow, or the old “turn plow” as many people know it, will have to be uSed. The bottom plow will go down to 5 or 6 inches and go under this “hard patt’Wayer, lift it out, nd tern it over. Farm ers that are now ti««»g the bot tom plow find that roots go be-/ low this layer and hold up bet ter during dry perteds; This type of land preparatlofi .. will take more time. However, once over, the job is about complete. • • • Dairy herds in Laurens Coun ty that are on DHIA have in creased in production by over 890 pounds during the past twelve months. The DHIA test gives a dairyman an accurate method of culling and kepes him on his tose. He becomes more conscious of management and what it in production. He knows more about the border line cows, his herd average, the butter fat test, and he sees th eneed for and tries to produce quality feed. All of this adds up to a higher herd average and a herd of cows that has a far greater potential value. • • * The South Carolina Angus As sociation will have ita annual quality sale, March 11. The sale will be held at Orangeburg, be ginning at 1 p. m. Eighteen bulla ; and 98 females will be selling. H. L. Eason, Asst. County Afsot, and Cecil Milam are planning to attend. * * * v The deadline for requesting cotton acreage has been exten ded to March 19th.
