Mr. and Mrs. Ed Bigbee and children, Kathy and Billy, Clyde Bigbee, Jr., and Mrs. Dorothy In spite of the adverse weather conditions, Laurens County came through with a higher yield of cotton in 1962 than in 1961. Re cords show through December ist., that Laurens County ginned 3,229 bales in 1962, while in 1961, for the same period, the figure was 8,071. Considering the fact that 1962 was considered, in most communities, to be a bad cotton year. I’m very proud of the re sults. Also, we had less acres. 1961 was one of the best cotton years that I’ve ever seen, es pecially for those who managed properly. There was no end to the yield, providing the weevils were kept out, and we certainly had fewer weevils in 1861, while in 1962, we had more weevils and much drier weather. Some farmers put a limit to their investment per acre in cot ton. They don’t see mto be will ing to go that last mile. It seems to me that the last mile will have to be included. It seems that there are enough fanners who go all the way and are doing well, to show those who aren’t willing, that it does pay. In fact, we stifli^Tr have those who will not spend a dime on insect control. I believe that boll weevil has contributed more to a low standard of living ban any one factor in Laurens County—think of it. Farmers ^rhe have ^creeks or branch bottoms that' are wen drained and not in pasture could well spend these winter months cleaning up these areas. The land, of course, is much better and the moisture will contribute grass where, it is needed most.
