THE CLINTON CHRONICLE Thursday, August 17, 1961 U While Hollywood has been apt ly called “The Film Capital of the World," and Pitt County, North Carolina, tjie “Tobacco Capital” of the United States, let us take the liberty to claim Lake Murray in the heart, of the state as the “Water Sports fapital of South Carolina.” At least, in its location and be cause of the vast coverage area. Lake Murray is believed to at tract as many persons as any other water sports arena in the* Palmetto State. The lake is easily accessible to the combined 200,000 or more in the Greater Columbia and Lexing ton County population centers. A 15-minute auto ride from the heart of the captial city takes one to the lower end of the lake. What one sees, however, from the bridge across the dam 12 miles northwest of Columbia and the adjacent parking areas is no true picture of the hugeness of the lake .It would be hard within a single day to survey all of Lake Murray and its back-up waters by a moving auto or boat. There are fish camps, marinas, docks, homes with mooring places, sandy shores, rocky perches and other habitable points all along the banks of the massive lake. Despite the thickly settled shorelines, one can get that feeling of far-awayness. Relaxation comes for the seek ing at Lake Murray. Whether you own cabin or castle on its banks or visit the many public or commercialized areas, you may relax easily as the cool breezes blow briskly through the shade trees. Someone has unofficially esti mated that Lake Murray is nor mally about 10 degrees cooler than in towns 10 minutes away. Too, there is a different atmos phere. You may stay at home and Kct a sun tan, but getting one at Lake Murray is far more pleas- uarbel, as indicated by the nu merous sun bathers on encount ers. Boats, boats and more boats! You name it, you’ll find the kind of boat you look for some where on Lake Murray—that is, of course, excepting the larger variety. There are sailing vessels—these may be found in large numbers on a Sunday afternoon floating lazily along with the breezs on ruffled waves. There are race-type runabouts -these will be seen towing the Water skiing set and they may be seen any afternoon, holidays and week-ends. Then, there are the small and large dinghies that just run the lake for ardent fishermen. Most of the time these may be seen ly ing idle in the water or moving slowly toward some cove for an angler patiently awaiting the catch.- Too, you'll find more expen sive yachts and motor launches. These are used for party boats or overnight trips to the far reaches of the lake or attributing streams. A yachtsman told this reporter that he could travel considerable distances and spend as much as a whole week-end seeing the sights in navigable waters with out leaving Lake Murray and its tributaries. FINAL SETTLEMENT Take notice that on the 12th day of September, 1961, I will render a final account of my acts and doings as Executor of the estate of Lydie Simpson Pitts in the of fice of the Judge of Probate of Laurens County, at 10 o’clock a. m , and on the same day will ap ply for a final discharge from my trust as Executor. Any person indebted to said es tate is notified and required to make payment on or before that date; and all persons having claims against said estate will present them on or before said date, duly proven or be forever barred. WILLIAMS ROY PITTS, JR., Executor August 11, 1961 4c-S-7 Saluda river is the main tribu tary to Lake Murray. Other streams, including several creeks. hold the lake’s backwaters. There are hundreds of miles of shore- land around its bays and coves. The lake and its backwaters are situated in Lexington, Rich land, Newberry and Saluda coun ties. There are places in each of these counties where boatsmen may launch their craft. ■> If you live in the Midlands Area of South Carolina you per haps have already availed your self of the pleasures afforded by a visit to Lake Murray. But, South Carolinians and their neigh bors may find a trip to this water sports arena a very enjoyable one. Visit your neighborhood service station and get a map showing your direction to Lake Murray and don’t forget, many of these have maritime information also. LEGAL NOTICE OF HEARING The South Carolina Public Ser vice Commission has received a petition from the Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Com pany requesting approval of cer tain changes in its exchange rates, mileage charges and charges for collect intrastate sta- tion-to-station toll service. The company’s petition informs the Commission that many of its exchanges have now grown out of the present groupings which were established in the Commission’s order of August IS, 1932. In order to give all parties an opportunity to be heard, a public hearing will be held in 'the Commission’s office in the Wade Hampton State Office Building in Columbia, South Carolina, on Tuesday, Septem ber 12, 1961, at 11:00 A.
