Thursday, Jaly 6, 1961 THE CLINTON CHRONICLE 11 CITY RECREATION NEWS The Whitmire Palmetto team served up first place the past week. They have won twelve and lost one game, with two more games remaining on their sched ule. In second place there is a tie between Bailey and Joanna, with eight victories and five losses. All Palmetto teams have two remain ing games to be played. Clinton will be host to a sub- district two Palmetto tourna ment. This will be a double elim ination affair with Woodruff, Laurens and Clinton. These games will be on the Palmetto field which is located on the jun ior high school playground. This tournament will start Monday, July 24, at 5:00 p. m. Clinton will meet Woodruff in the opening game. The winner of this half will meet the winner of the Rock Hill, Chester, and Winnsboro se- rise in a two best of three series for the district two Palmetto tournament. All-star practice for the Palmetto League will start July 15. LITTLE BOT LEAGUE The Moose Club is assured of at least a tie for the league cham pionship in the Little Boys League All Little Boys teams ' have two more games $pch to play. If the Moose Club wins one of the two they have to play they will have won the cup. The Moose Club has to play Joanna and Whitmire the second and third place teams in the league right now, and anything can happen When these three teams have met in the past very close ball games were played In fact. Whitmire gave the Moose their only defeat of the second half. The Little Boys are trying out for the all-star team this week as there is no regular league sched uled games because the mills are shut down for the week of the fourth vacation. This team will perhaps be picked after practice Saturday, as they must be picked one week in advance of the dis trict two Little Boys tournament V which will begin in Laurens Mon day, July 17. John Henry Lott of the Joanna Little Boys team broke the park record for home runs and strike outs the past week He has hit 8 home runs. William Archie’s record was seven, and John Hen ry has struck out 140 William Archie also held this record with 133. Francis Cooper of the Ex change Club, has hit six home runs, and Jerry Chandler of the Kiwanis Club has hit five. Jerry Chandler dropped several points in his batting average this week, but continues to lead the Little Boys League with an aver- ge of .506. William Graham of the Whit mire team, took over first place from Gerald McWatters of the Bailey team. William is hitting .577 and Gerald .567. William also hit two home runs last week, bringing his total to six. That’s pretty good when you realize the fence is 250 feet away and these boys are 13 and 14 year olds. Regular season play will end next week. After that the Little Boys will be playing in a tourna ment in Laurens and the boys in the Palmetto League will be try ing out for the all-star team. The girls’ softball teams will end their regular season play next week and the following week the two top teams in each league will have playoffs. Clinton girls play Whitmire here next week. The tennis program is progress ing nicely although we have had lots of rain recently in the mor nings to make it too wet to play. The boys practice tennis on Mon days, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8:15 a. m. until 10:15 a. m., and the girls practice on Tues days, Thursdays and Saturdays from 8:10 a. m. until 10:15 a. m.
