For details write Rawleigh’s, Dept. SC-300-4. Rich mond, Va. 1c ample standby equipment for use in an emergency. One day we are going to realize this, and this In cludes the government. I’m not opposed to other forms of public transporatkm such as air and bus travel. I use them, but my favorite is still the raU- roada. Recently I had another de lightful train ride on the Southern RaUwey As Is often the case. I secured a permit to ride the loco motive. To me that is always a thrilling experience. Here you can see best the various steps taken by the railroad to provide for the safety of those who ride the train. There is not a grade crossing at which the engibeer does not blow the whistle as a warning. There is another safety device called the ‘‘dead man.” It is a pedal something like the clutch pedal on aa automobile which the engibeer must keep pushed down at all times. If through illness or any other cause be should remove his foot from it, the train will automatically come to a halt. On this trip I learned of an other safety device called a hot- box detector. One of the hazards of train operation is that a wheel bearing under a car may become hot due to Insufficient lubrication. If not detected and corrected, it can cause an accident. The hot-box detector is a device which automatically records the temperature of each wheel bedr ing under a car as the car passes over it. This is recorded in a dis tant office where a man watches the record of each car. If he de tects an increase in temperature, he can call the train conductor or engineer, both of which have ra dio telephones, warn of the hot- box and even tell them which car it is on. It is amazing. It is my convictton that every parent should give their child or children the privilege of a train ride. The railroads have a family plan which is excellent. Of course train travel is slower than air travel, but most of us should not be in too big a burn to ride the train occasionally. Incidentally, I have been told that train travel is the safest form of transportation, certainly much safer than your private automo bile. Social Security Is retirement just around the corner for you? Or is it a matter of years? In either case, be sure to include social security as a basic part of your retirement plan. It is surprising the number of people who let social security “take care of itself” until they have retired. Then, if there is trouble in getting needed informa tion and evidence, the fir,t benefit check will be late. It is suggested that each worker check on his social security account every three years. Then, any errors in his record can be easily correct ed. Another suggestion is that peo ple planning to retire should visit the social security office two or three months before they quit work. Your social security of flee will explain what is needed to get your social security checks start ed promptly. OFFICE SUPPLIES CHRONICLE PUB. CO.
