Thursday, August 11, 19^0 THE CLINTON CHRONICLE 13 EVERYDAY COUNSELOR By Bishop Herbert Spaagh This column is for men, particu larly husbands. It is based upon an observation by the veteran physi cian, Dr. Walter C. Alvarez, who was for a long time on the staff of the famed Mayo Clinic. He used to write a newspaper column. In one of these he admonished men, par ticularly husbands, to spend a little time studying feminine psychology, particularly the fact that change delights women. “When a man comes home at the end of the day, what he wants moot is peace and quiet. But his wife may not want these things. She has been alone all day and perhaps bored— with no one to talk to—so she starts an argument. She wants to be no ticed and not just ignored by the man, who sits there smoking and reading his paper. Hence often she gets more and more annoyed until she bawls him out and starts a fight. She may not 'be so much sore at him, just in need of some excite ment. He then told a story which I read some months ago in the Reader’s Digest, I think. OFFICE SUPPLIES CHRONICLE PUB. CO. ' PHONE 74 J. R. Crawford SURVEYING CLINTON. S. C. A husband was waiting in the liv ing room for his wife to finish dress ing and .go with him to a party. To his amazement, when she came downstairs she had on a nightgown. “Goodness gracious,” said her husband, “what are you doing in that?” “Well,” said the wife, "now that you have at last noticed what I am wearing, I’ll go up and change!” Dr. Alvarez quoted a writer in the New Yorker advising that “a hus band should occasionally change his technique, and on leaving in the morning, should take his wife by both ears, give her a lusty smack on the lips, tweak her nose playful ly, and say, Goodbye, gorgeous, I will find it hard to wait till I see you again tonight.” After many years of marriage counseling, it is my strong convic tion that husbands take their wives entirley too much for granted. They ignore the little thoughtful acts and gifts which mean so much to a wife. Here are a few: bring home a small personally chosen gift when you take an out of town trip. Be sure to notice when your wife puts on a new dress or hat and compliment her for it. When you talk to your wife on the telephone from work, adopt a tone of voice that sounds like you are still in love with her. I frequently listen to men talk to their wives from their place of work. Their tone is dull, flat, and monosyllabic. If you want tb make a hit, screw up your courage, open up your pocketbook, and take her downtown to buy a dress for her. Finally, if you love her, tell her so at least once a day. Don’t say, as I’ve heard many men observe, “Sure I love her That’s' why I mar ried her.” * You can own this smile when you save with us Today, 24 million Americans save for their future need* and wants at Insured Savings and Loan Associations like ours, where their money is safe and earns excellent returns.
