EVERYDAY COUNSELOR Many people are learning a new appreciation of our railroads and are turning to them again for travel. The Southern Railway Sys tem is offering new low one-way and and round-trip family bargains. Under the new plan the husband pays full one-way fare, the wife a half one-way fare; child 12-ffl. half oneway fare; child. S-U. one-quar ter one-way fare; child under five, free. It doesn’t take special attractions to get me on a passenger train. I've always loved them ever since I wm a boy. 1 like nothing better than to ride in the cab of a locomotive Recently 1 had another locomo tive ride when I traveled in the cab of the locomotive pulling the South ern's crack Crescent limited There’s always a.thrill to H. The cab of the modem diesel is even more comfortable than the modern automobile Imagine driv ing a car down a smooth bi^raaj where you don’t have to worry about steering According to statistics the rail road is our safest form of transpor tation. When you ride in a locomo tive cab you can see and learn some of the reasons Every employee of the railroad is safety conscious Elaborate safety precautions have been taken. Both engineer and fire man occupy comfortable seats where there is no strain. While the locomotive is running, the engineer must keep a foot on a pedal some thing like an automobile clutch which is culled the "dead man " If he takes his foot off this pedal, the train automatically stops. A whistle board stands by the track well ahead of each grade crossing It calls for four blasts from the whistle, two longs, one short, one long. The engineer must be bold ing the whistle down for the laat Mast when he goes over the cross ing. Automatic train control is an other safety feature At reguar in tervals signal lights of three colon are mounted on top of a post—red, yellow, or green If another train is in the section ahead between two signal posts, the light shows red If there is a train two sections ahead, the light shows yellow When the engineer enters either of these sections he muat be alert and hold back a lever which gives him only a brief period to pass the signal. If he ignores this, the train stops auto matically The green light means all clear . The Reading Railroad of Pennsyl vania has preserved several steam locomotives. Tbey are running weekly excursions with them call ed “Iron Horse Rambles.’’ They are extremely popular. Why not take your children for a train ride? If you don’t want to fight traffic and hot weather on the highways this vacation why not try an air conditioned train. I hav« nothing against other forms of public trans portation. 1 just love trains. 7/fe (W 'friot fSbr “A great many people have gotten into debt by trying to keep up with others who al ready were.”.
